It has to be not only huge but also reliable, or else SSDs will kill HDDs in NAS.
As soon as SSD prices drop, HDDs will stop selling unless there's a good reason to buy them and with this much data, reliability is a huge factor because not everyone can afford to buy 16 or these... |

I almost exclusively use WD Red Pro's in my rig, which imho are unbeatable for large archival.
The larger capacity is why I still use them aside from the better value per GB, although the price has been fluctuating a lot the past two years.
If I replaced my setup with SSD's, it would be like buying 3 super computers  |

Yeah, the price tag is not very attractive and I'd have to buy 8 at once to use the RAID card effectively.
Dunno, the SSDs are much smaller and do no heat that much.
Often they consume less power, too.
I was thinking about building a custom frame that goes into a set of 3.5" slots and be done with it  |
