The gamers of the 80s were iterations behind the gamers of the 90s. By the mid-2000s, things were exponentially more sophisticated than they were in the nineties. That trend has continued up until the present day, with exponential leaps in impatience happening every 1 to 2 years following Moore’s Law—which, as yet, cannot be totally ruled out.

Back in the 80s gamers played to complete challenges.
In the 90s it was a bit more about bragging rights for having completed a game or having found some secrets.
After that, it all went to shit, it's all about achievements and gamers want it 'now', with minimal challenge. Enter the cheater.

Then, there's the industry that took out gaming from games - it's more about graphics and all sorts of flashy crap (effects) these days rather than story and immersion. Good games are just rare these days. Maybe one or two a year.
