ed-security-updates-for-windows-7uot;recent AMA. Fortunately, Mike Cure, a Microsoft engineer answered:

MSE will continue to receive signature updates after Jan. 14. The FAQ has since been updated to clear up the confusion. Those with ESU will continue to receive signature updates to MSE until 2023.

They'll still do all the work, and create the patches, and so on. They just won't let you have them.

Quite the asshole move, really, but then again this is capitalism.
