hmmm, another zombie city game, this time with a well known franchise.
What strikes me as redundant is yet again the use of cop cars and buses to cordon off areas the devs don't want the user to go so that they follow the yellow brick road.
I'd like for once to see a developer come at this issue (wanting to direct the user toward scripted events) with a different idea than the tried and true 'road block' mechanism. How about letting people explore to their hearts content in an open world, but if they get too far out of line they are chased back to where they should be (by faster or an overwhelming number of foes), or they simply get killed in a horrible inescapable fashion with grim warnings on the death screen. "Good little boys and girls stay within the lines..."
These kinds of mechanics would give users who finish the game something to play around with afterwards... "Lets see how far down these side streets we can get before something sick happens", etc. Games like 'skate' have already made minigames out of seeing how badly you can hurt your skater, why not take that a couple steps further with other genres? You can keep the beacons or waypoints of somekind so that the user knows the general direction of where to go; just make it more of a mystery instead of having only ONE path to follow. |
