Interesting. Trooper is MT with Jedi OT. I'm assuming Jedi are mdps builds with the magic consular being support. Smuggler must be cc or dps or both. I was under the impression they were breaking the holy trinity in MMO's. Haven't really seen a successful MMO break away from tank healer dps class or role systems entirely and doubt it will ever happen.

yeh, they said they would be breaking away from the trinity system, which is old and dying feature in most mmo.

Also, Star Trek Online doesn't have that feature, well not a required feature to do group content.

You need a group to do group content, don't get me wrong, but i remember being in a group comprising of nothing other then Science Vessels and we were taking turns using Scramble Sensors, it was quite funny seeing the enemy ships attacking each other.

It can be done, if they did it right, but most players are too afraid to learn something new so mmos comes up with something that works and i got to admit, the trinity system works, even though its boring and dull and someone should just plan a thermal nuke to the trinity system and blow it up.

I've played STO and had a tactical and science capped chars. It didn't really break away from healer tank dps. The fact is the ships were the trinity just a slight twist on it.

It's good that SWTOR is setup this way as it's least likely to suck.

I am saying that a group full of science vessels can do just as much as a group consisting of a Cruiser, science vessel and escort class ships, that is what i would like to see on more mmos, where you can have a group consisting of any class and still succeed, then you could group however you like, but thats just my opinion.

I just don't like that its a requirement for group content.

I agree with you somewhat James as it gets rather boring and becomes more about crunching the numbers.

STO on the other hand yes twisted it around somewhat but you have to realize that the ships are the character or spec for the most part not the other way around. It was hard for some people to grasp that despite your character specific profession your ship decided what your role was for the most part.

The last five years or so I haven't really seen an MMO where the healers couldn't group and get things done. Wish STO was a bit better than it was and is now as I would still play it. Boredom and lack of customization Sad.

I never have issues doing dps in my science vessel with my beam arrays, being forced into specific ship classes is a crap way of doing it.

Also, its both, the ground class and the ship class that define you, you can have a tactical - cruiser combo, you have the survivability of the cruiser with the dps of a tactical officer or a survivability of a engineer officer and a escort class ship.

I always go with a Tactical - Science Vessel combo, good dps with good untility, taking on 3+ ships? use scramble sensors and watch them blow themselves up and mop up whats left.

A Player that was the leader of a group i was in, doing a fleet engagement basically tried to force me into a healing role, but i have none of the ship skills for that and all the group laughed and kicked me out of the group and since its not like WoW and you leave their instance.

stayed around watching them get slaughtered, then the leader moaned at me saying if i healed, they would not have died, they tried again and out of pity for them i used a scramble sensor skill and the npc ships practicually killed each other and he tried to get me back into his group and i just basically told him to pee off. lol

The pve in STO is very very very easy. If you looked at the numbers a tactical captain does marginally better dps in an escort or any ship for that matter versus engineer or science. The captain skills are far more useful in your decision making.

I never lost a 1v1 or even a 1v2 in pvp with science/bop setup since cloak + snb + vm = iwin every time. It's a shame they nerfed mes so hard as it made my fed escort a pleasure in pvp and made pve even easier and faster. Ground pve and pvp was pretty bland in beta and at release. It could be fun with some friends but it is far and away behind what you can play for free fps wise and even pay to play. Heh I used spam fbp3 and 2 on my klink all the time when the fedzerg would be too much for the pug or team I was with.

It's hard to judge the mechanics of the game since they nerfed the pve so hard. You can literally use scramble sensors and loot even group level mobs like the dreads. Borg were a pushover even it's quite sad. The fact that you don't really have to use team tactics at all in STO pve is why so many stopped playing or complain how it's a joke.

My toons for fed and klink are capped and have all the purples already from running dailies since it's inception. If they make the game better I wouldn't mind jumping back in and checking it out.

EDIT: Sorry about the negativity. When a company drags a franchise that I like through the mud it's kind of irritating.

Its funny how people moan and bitch about a game being too easy and when they make it harder, they bitch because its too hard.

I remember playing Homeworld 2, now that game was fun to play with my brother, but beyond that, the single player campaign was utter trash, because the AI was programmed to cheat, it went over the ship limits for the level, they spawned a fleet that counters yours 100% and then keeps building ships and even if you cloak your ships and move to the other side of the map, the AI would move its ships to the new location, they just didn't attack, so the AI knew you were there and just waited for you to decloak.

I would prefer an easy to beat game then a game like that any day of the week.

Sounds like Starcraft or similar games when they start so-called "balancing" the game because of whiners.

Homeworld and Homeworld 2 I stayed up a whole weekend about playing those games when they first came out. I don't mind if the AI cheats if it makes it more of a battle. The issue with making a game too easy in single player is it's usually more difficult to increase the challenge rather than cheating yourself using a trainer or the like if it's too hard.

The game was a blast to play against a friend or any human.

Cryptic made some big changes to PVE to dumb it down. People would blow up their ship once in awhile or get overwhelmed. Fact is there wasn't a death penalty and you respawned fairly quickly within seconds it didn't much matter how hard it was or wasn't. Ground wise the klink swordmasters in pve would hit for huge damage but were usually a little hiccup for many. Quirks or bugs were evident but didn't prevent quest completion most of the time and were doable.

I usually go with the flow of whatever game I play no matter the changes. If it's not fun anymore I just don't play it anymore.
