I feel sorry for them, but maybe if they actually have finished the game they wouldn't get fired. I don't see what they expected anyway. To work for 10 years on something and not finish it still..Man, I expected them to be fired 5 years ago. They had it coming. |

Yes, with hindsight they obviously thought their jobs were around forever. If they had 'sell-able' code they could have shipped it (DNF) and -probably due to the hype- sold millions. Enough to tide the company over the credit crisis.
They seriously blew it big time!! I don't want to hear about whining, 'i'm due a baby soon, where is my paycheck coming from', it takes 9 months for the baby to appear, the crisis has been around longer than that. They just where in total denial. Besides, babies are *YOUR* choice and preventable, whatever happens. Millions of us make life choices and don't go bleating about it. Get over it, the world over has lost jobs! -not just 3D Realms

All I hope for is that some other company takes up their style of game design.
Take prey for example. The level of detail of the opening scene was so immersive I could barely come to grips with it. Everything you think should be doable to the objects in the game was. That's what 3DR always did... You could turn on faucets and flush toilets in DN3D before you could in any other game, and why? Just because, that's why. Because it's the little things that push a good game over the top.
It's something Valve took to for the most part, but doesn't do enough of IMO. I like to fuck around in a game sometimes, and when the game responds to that with innovation, my soul smiles.
It's all about building an atmosphere, that's what 3DR was good at.
The perfect game for immersion sake will have no door which you can't open or blast open with a shotgun. I want nothing holding me back in a game besides my imagination. Unfortunately I have doubts anything like that is coming. GTA4 is the closest to getting there of anything so far.
Judging from the 'chair story' floating around the net, it's pretty clear that they tried to pull off the biggest bamboozle in the history of gaming and just happened to come up short by a couple decades.
But we're supposed to feel sorry for this webmaster guy though? Nah sorry, not in this economy, you saw this coming, you should've saved 10Gs for a storm knowing you had a baby coming. Get angry all you want, it still doesn't matter. You got to work for the kind of company that most of us dream to, take that for what it's worth and move on. Given how bland the website had become, I guess it's no surprise you're nervous. Nothing on there anybody with a PHP understanding can't do in a weeks worth of effort. So much for taking an opportunity to separate yourself from the herd. |

| Joe's a moron. He was full willingly a forum admin for a company who couldn't even put out a game. George etc, probably find other work but Joe.. well, we dig our own graves. Not a smart career choice and not to much brains at this point to have a kid. I thought he was a nice guy etc, but the problem he is in is his own doing, not anyone else's and I only feel mildy sorry for him. He should have had a little more hind sight imo. The community is what kept these guys alive, to be pissed off at your faithful community because they were mislead for 13 years that's just idiotic imo. I still don't see it being the end of the game however. |
