The Cumberland Times reports (thanks
FiringSquad) that Allieu Shaw, a 19 year old college student at Frostburg State University in Maryland, was arrested today on two misdemeanor counts of disrupting a school operation after making threatening remarks while playing the Xbox 360 version of Call of Duty 4.

So many people talk a bit of smack while on voicechat or ingame chat, what is so special about this case?
The kid must have been so much more convincing than all the other big mouth one man army heros out there.
Perhaps they have to take it more seriously because of the recent shootings. Although this just reeks of patheticness, if that can be a word. |

Not any different from someone joking that they have a bomb at an airport. It's a silly immature response and not -in both cases- to be taken as a joke in light of present circumstances AND were he was.
The IDIOT was actualy at the university that HE threatened to shoot up!
Most folk have opinions and make stupid remarks, but do it in sensible places. Not broadcasting openly on XBox Live!
Sure he probably 'spat the dummy' but it's how he spat the dummy that counts.
They guy needed a 'wake-up call' and it looks like he got it. Maybe an inspection for loose screws wouldn't go amiss either... |

I sure hope the guy doesn't go to jail (or get a massive fine) for it...unless of course he turns out to actually be a nut-job with a written plan and pipe-bombs/guns in his dorm room.
But, I think comparing it to saying you have a bomb in an airport (or yelling fire in a theatre) is fitting. If nobody reacted to it, and he actually *did* shoot the place up, how would you feel if you'd been playing with him and heard his threat? Sure, 99.9% of the random spouting off online is just that...spouting off...but there's always that tiny chance he could be for real. So yeah, I think calling the cops on him was the right thing to do.
Moral of the story = If yer gonna blow up/shoot up/rob/etc someplace...it's probably best to *not* go yelling about it in public chats. |
