NVIDIA announced that their new mid-range RTX 3060 graphics card will have a built-in anti cryptocurrency mining firmware that will automatically reduce the mining hash rate by 50%. NVIDIA confirmed that this technology does not only work on the software level, but also on the hardware level. Bryan Del Rizzo claimed th

It was a PR stunt to give the impression they care more about gamers than profit.
I can't blame them. If Nvidia can make money out of a bunch of losers mining a shitcoin, good for them. |

This would even happen if the protection was HW-based.
They'd just compare two cards and resolder the components to unlock.
Not sure why we expected Nvidia to get this right.
Seems, once again, the gamers got the short stick.
This has to happen inside the chip as a HW modification; that's the one place hackers can't get to. |

gotta love this ...
some clown named Bryan Del Rizzo from nVidia claims:
Hi Ryan. It's not just a driver thing. There is a secure handshake between the driver, the RTX 3060 silicon, and the BIOS (firmware) that prevents removal of the hash rate limiter.
Meanwhile a wrong driver release completely removes the protection. What handshake then, nVidia? Secure? Psssh, gtfo here |

| You know, I think what Nvidia meant is that a handshake is needed to DISABLE the rate limiter. As such, any claims to be unhackable are plain wrong. |
