Microsoft is expected to include a Start button with the Windows 8.1 update and now we have our first look at the new button and it looks quite familiar to those of you who use Windows 8. The button looks exactly like the charms bar Start button, which should come as little surprise, and is located exactly where

Windows 8 isn't designed for the desktop primarily, it's meant to be a gateway to the more mobile market. The Modern UI is an important thing for Microsoft right now, they're not going to abandon it - nor should they, really, it's a very good mobile approach to computing. Works very nicely on the Windows Phones too, those are arguably the nicest to use on the market right now.

It's not that great on the desktop though, which is a dilemma for them, so it will be interesting to see where this heads.

F that. Windows phones and tablets suck ass. I thought Apple devices were total n00b devices until I saw a windows phone and tablet. What a total piece of junk!!!! Tells me Google is laughing seriously hard at everyone. But to revamp your whole OS that 'everyone' uses with 'dissimilar' devices to work primarily with Windows shit devices is idiotic. To not allow people to get out of all that shit and just have the regular interface is even more absolutely f'ing retarded. Then the nerve to say 8.1 will be free. Holy F these guys are total idiots. I'm sticking with Windows 7 for a good long while and avoid all that bloated bs gui.

In case you bought laptop with Windows 8 shit you will be forced to tweak BIOS settings to be able boot your laptop from your own CD/DVD/Flash whdat

Who uses cd/dvd drives anymore? All my pc's are lacking drives. Laptop would be a big no on any optical drive imo. USB3 thumb drives are what I use as boot drives sometimes even.

Anyways I don't doubt that most of us using Windows are doing so as there isn't an alternative due to gaming or some piece of software we can't run without it. Most people could give a two shits what logo is there when the computer boots just that they can find the icons of what they installed and are familiar with Smile.

Some things still don't install correctly via a USB stick, so I keep an external (USB/Firewire) DVD drive handy to install Linux/whatever.

Yeah. But I've talked about this issues:

http://support.ts.fujitsu.com/wdb/FAQContentStart.asp?ID=233462327&Info=SA&PLS=&Sprache=EN&LNG=COM&Todo=FAQ

If you don't tweak BIOS properly you won't be able boot from any device. Apparently it requires more than just turn secure boot off. Of course, depends on the model.

Regarding to DVDs/CDs..as Csimbi mentioned some things really don't install correctly via a USB stick. The DVD drive (at least external one) is still necessary.

I understand people's discomfort at changing the interface (and bifurcating the traditional desktop and ModernUI is cognitively jarring), but the Start screen is faster, prettier, and more functional than the old Start menu.

Besides that, Windows 8 is more responsive than even Windows 7. If you hover in the lower-left-hand corner, a thumbnail for the Start screen appears (so it's never truly been gone), and right-clicking there reveals a much more powerful menu than in previous versions.

Microsoft should do four things to improve 8: allow users to bypass Metro, unify the interfaces by allowing legacy programs to run fullscreen (like a Metro app) and Metro apps to run windowed (something I'm doing with ModernMix), and refrain from trying to lock down new software to the Windows Store.

(I'll not buy a version of Windows that goes the route of Apple's iDevices.)

I have to be wary of a newer bios that may require tuning to boot from USB or the like? What the fuck is going on in the world that this is allowed? I've never had an issue in over thirty years like this. Sounds like a laptop issue only. Never had a problem using usb as my OS drive nor as my installation source really. The older stuff I think caused some problems when I had to install drivers or some shit in win2k over a decade ago.

Yes, it is a laptop issue mostly - this is the only way MS can ensure that people actually use that piece-of-crap WinDOS 8.
