What does he think of the recent breed of graphics processors from AMD and Nvidia? That\'s precisely what he was asked by the folks at PC Gamer, and his response is rather interesting:

PCG: If you were to buy a graphics card right now, what would you get?

John Carmack: Let me caution this by saying that this is n

Actually I think this is saying quite alot:

I mean, the latest integrated graphics parts probably are more powerful in many ways than the consoles.

Of course all the blabber about Nvidia vs ATI/AMD cards was exactly as you said...nothing. Which is pretty much how any talk about which brand is better goes.

Right, but I was expecting him to have an unbiased opinion of his own. He surely does not run both cards in the same box.

Use your brains a little! Hi is in no position to give an opinion!
It will be a pure PR for the brand, so.... the dude is tactical and speaks right, that is more correct and true!
If you look at the stupid "war" between ATI and NV, all the benchmarks and jerk web site comparisons, youlll see an difference of 2-3%, or 2-4fps and thats how you tell what is the best card out there....
Thats just for kids and idiots...

What truly sells a VGA for me is the driver dev. So ATI here fails...
But again, thats for me!

This is what matters to me.

Nvidia does have a stronger dev-relations team. I can always drop an email for an obscure question.

That's why you don't see 50 millions fixes in drivers like with an AMD card. ATI/AMD or whatever you want to call them, has never had the foothold in games as Nvidia has. You want a card that works, not one that will work eventually.

In all my PC years, I have seen games that work better on ATI cards and some others that work better on Nvidia cards. Truth be told, Nvidia's TWIWMTBP program is far more aggressive than anything AMD has to offer.

AMD has worked miracles since the 4000 series though. In all major titles, I see instant Crossfire support, together with SLI support.

As far as single card configurations go, they are the same for the most part.

Once i spent a lot of time on the internet, arguing why AMD was better than nVidia. But really who cares any more, they all work as long as you get a card that can handle the job you throw after it.
Now a days i prefer spending my time playing eve online and posting on goonfleet dot com

Well, you are always so sure about your opinion and you shouldn't, since you are obviously not following PC developments as closely as some of us.

Newsflash.

Hydrophobia: Runs nicely on both IHV's cards. No multi gpu support from either.

Brink: It is very heavy and as a result it needs dual gpu in order to get 60fps at 1080P. Nvidia provides SLI support, ATI does not have crossfire profile yet.

Withcer 2: Runs like FUCK on my uber expensive 570 SLI system. We are talking 7fps at ultra and/or high here. Definitely driver related. It runs relatively decently on my 5850 crossfire system, with 20-40 fps at the same settings. Crossfire does not scale well though. Again drivers needed.

So all in all, nobody is perfect. Considering the vast amount of hardware that needs to be supported, shit can happen.

The bottom line is, that things will be ironed out and the fact remains that these games look and feel, leaps and bounds better than the stupid console versions.

Nope not following PC's. That's why I build 5 gaming machines for people in the last week and I am yawning like shit right now at work because I was up finishing one till 2am this morning so he could pick it up at 8am. I built 2 alone last night. Yep definitely not into PC's. I build only Nvidia because when I built with ATI, I always get PC's back. I got sick of it. As a former ATI owner, I know ATI sucks. ATI is always behind. Who wants a gaming card from them when they can't even keep up support and drivers wise? Last time I put ATI in a computer was a X800 which barely even had a lifespan as they decommissioned it due to problems. Left me high and dry. To be honest, nobody I have built PC's for except for maybe 1 or 2 people have ever specifically asked for ATI. HTPC's are about the only thing I make that has ATI in it, because I can build a system for dirt cheap with a $40 HDMI card.

Witcher 2 is a bug festival and obviously you are clueless, the problem that you are reporting is due to the game not Nvidia drivers. It's to do with 3D Vision being installed and the game not liking it. From everyone I know who got Witcher 2 they say it should have stayed in beta, it's a bug festival, just another game released before it was ready.

Well the latest forceware beta fixed the game anyway. The game is immensely cpu limited as well. Still not a bad game. It's quite playable as it is. No serious bugs or crashes so far. I do agree that another month of testing would only do it good. Leaps and bounds better than what the consoles have to offer though.

As for the Nvidia/ATI dispute, well once a fanatic always a fanatic. I am not expecting anything better from you. Just have a look back and remember the driver fiasco with the 196.75 drivers which was causing the fans to spin down and cards get burnt as well as the 267.52 which was causing the 590s to burn. Come on man. Preach to someone else, not me.
