When Sony issued a recent PlayStation 3 update removing the device\'s
ability to install alternate operating systems like Linux, it did so to
protect copyrighted content - but several research projects suffered
collateral damage. According to Arstechnica, the Air
Force Research Laboratory in Rome, New York picked u

| I wondered about this because I knew it was ongoing and I was actually trying to find out if they got some special firmware from Sony. Figures they didn't. Sony is such a bunch of morons. They have likely totally screwed so many potential sales of their console. Total fucking retards. I have shunned all Sony stuff in my house. It's all gone. I should have taken a picture so you could all have a great laugh but I basically filled my garbage can with all my Sony components. Sony VCR, DVD player, Alarm clock, 20" TV, phone, radio lol! Everything Sony I chucked it out, working or not. Nobody even scooped it up before garbage pickup. Are you surprised?! I wasn't, I just had a good laugh. I told my wife, nobody wants it because Sony is shit anyhow. Sony is permanently off my list of future purchases. I hope more people do the same. F Sony and their lies. The only thing I have is my PS3 since I own a crapload of games and don't want to take such a huge loss selling it. It's probably so fucking worthless now to most people. |

Well dude that is going extreme Sony clearout, I just wouldn't support them further why chuck out stuff you still use, unless you didn't. Can't blame ya though, and I don't feel sorry for Sony as they really are shark shit with the things they've done gotten away with, and carry on doing. Hopefully the recklessness will be the slow undoing of them, still perhaps its better to have them around than let the likes of Microsoft dominate another market who aren't as monopoly any better at all. I think it would better if they got the message that fucking around customers with dirty tactics like removing sold features and dodgy forced license upgrade manipulation will not be tolerated. And so what if they make a loss on selling the console it was them who wanted to win a blue-ray format war they ain't losing money at all... yet.
And Sony know all about class action law suits what with being patent shark scum along with the rest of these lying deceptive fucking lot..

probably assumed it was broken no? charity shop donation would have been better than a junkyard tip if it was still good/condition etc. |

I can understand the whining from those few that used LINUX on the PS3, but the whining from all the rest is just too much.
I am a LINUX user (on pc) and even though I created a 10GB partition on my PS3, I never installed it. Cause I found out that unless you plan to use it at a scientific project (meaning you have to code specific CBE applications), it is too damn slow. For the following reasons :
1) All the LINUX applications are not coded to use the ultra fast SPUs from the CELL. So they run only on the PPC core. No gain here...
2) Not enough memory for the LINUX. The system ram of PS3 is 256MB (the other 256MB are RSX memory). And from those 256MB you are left with about 200MB of free ram for your applications. (HDD swap is slow, not counting here...)
3) No direct access to the RSX, meaning no 3D acceleration...
I also do not like to lose features (even though I don't use them), but all that whining and reactions are IMO just plain stupid. Why throw away stuff that you already have paid and that works fine? Just because the manufacturer removed a feature you never used from a console that it's primary role is to play games? If you feel that hurt, just stop buying SONY products.
I know I will keep buying SONY products, unless I find something better.
PS. Sorry for my bad English... |
