Minecraft creator Markus \'Notch\' Persson has stated, categorically, that he does not consider piracy to be theft. Speaking at GDC, Persson said: \'If you steal a car, the original is lost. If you copy a game, there are simply more of them in the world.\' Persson also says he doesn\'t buy the idea of a \'lost sale\'.

i agree, though you do need to understand that there are some people that download it illegally to avoid paying, those i do NOT like, there are some that illegally download it and then sell it, those i HATE with a passion and there are those that do not like the wait time between releases and download it to play it and when its released in their area, they buy it.

There are also those that use pirated copies as a means of seeing if its worth buying, because demos are too rare now-a-days to judge the game by them, so people download the fullgame, see if its worth buying and if it is, buy it.

But if i did download something illegally and didn't like the game, i would buy it anyway, out of respect for the developers, even more so for this developer......developer with a brain....never saw that coming.

For example, Knights of the Old Republic 2 in the EU was delayed 3 months for nothing, nothing was fixed, a friend of mine got Kotor 2 for me while he was in the US and sent it to me and when the EU version came out, besides the EU and US tagging, the games were identical, so why have it delayed if nothing was done with it? This is what causes some of the piracy....the needless wait time.

I'm kind of torn on this to be honest. It's true what he said about stealing...but I think this is more of an issue on morality. Is it stealing if you steal my software? No, because I still have it. But is it moral that you copied my work and avoided paying for it? Certainly not.

If the world would suddenly say that its not stealing to copy other peoples code then this would invariably stifle creativity. No one wants to spend their blood and sweat just to have someone else take the credit for it. Why the hell would I develop a game if its legal for people to make a copy of it and not pay me a penny? Sure I could make a game if I got time on my hands and don't care about that. But a game developer has a life and needs like every other person. You can't commit to making games and only count on donations. You can't assume your game will be a hit even if it's the best game out there.

The fact is that there is no physical loss, but there is a mental loss. Every time someone 'steals/copies' your work with no benefit to you, we lose someone who could potentially bring more creativity and ideas to the table.

Yeah, all this coming from a guy that practically "stole" thousands of euros from registrations and not yet delivering a final product (talking about crapcraft here). I don't think he's got any moral ground to stand on.

you are counter productive. If you don't like something, you shouldn't buy it. I think we are in this mess now because developers think they should just hide the flaws, not release a demo, and then they deserve to make sales anyways because, well, they put an effort into it.
I put an effort into toilet every morning and no one pays me for that, on the contrary, I have to pay others for TP...
Imagine if movie trailers were made like most game trailers, no actual movie footage, just hype and developer diaries with some concept art bogus scenes here and there.
That is exactly what most of game industry leaders give us. And I should pay them out of respect? Sure, once they pay my morning effort out of respect.

hell, I download everything these days, and 90% of it is pure and utter crap. Take that shitstorm (aka bullet storm) for example. I played it for an hour or so, I find it to be boring, repetitive, unimaginative, repetitive again and then unimaginative some more. I deleted it. Thank god for torrents. I would never forgive myself for those 50 euros if I had spent it on a game that has lasting and appealing experience as much as an egg crust in omelet.

YOU CAN OWN ONLY WHAT YOU CAN CONTROL.

No security scheme is perfect, get money for the air you are breath is juden way...
A game in my country cost fourth times than in US, and the salaries here is four time less..., but
believe me, piracy is the best ad system.

I can't believe Microsoft or Sony is wasting millions in salaries or time in prortection schemas
than soon or later will be broken, It's the best example in USELESS managening ever.

I get working the WORST UGLY Office version 2007 in a bit, without cost, but what want the people?
Office 2003, they do the same in
office 2010, so what is the conclusion, they don't matter what is your want, but SOME IDIOT want.

The first place of the IDIOTS gadget and the IDIOTS consumers is APPLE..., you all are prisioners of
them, unfortunatelly Microsoft is in the same way.
