Stumpus: Solid and great games straight through.
But "Beyond Good and Evil", probably taken from Nietzches "Jenseits von Gut und Böse" by some loon, is the real gem - I played that game to bits when I by a coincidence got my hands on it.
Great music, story, charachters (Jade for the win!) - everything!
Hold on to it |

Yeah it's a pure classic, reminds me of games like 'Fade to Black','Another World','Sam & Max' and 'Grim Fandango' to name but a slight few of my classics i own -solid everything! When games where GAMES.
By the way since "Beyond Good and Evil" blew your socks off You would def like "Psychonauts' that ranks up there with the 'best ever' games in history category.
Another *amazing* story with unusual gameplay was "Farenheit" -Grab the demos here on Gameguru and see what you think.

Farenheit - or Indigo Prophecy was a excellent game, the only noted I have on is that it ties up the ending a bit to fast - other than that - excellent game, excellent story, gameplay, MUSIC and the setting... the first thrill when you see the winter swept lonely streets of New York... mmm... coosy.
Psychonauts I never got to play as well as a bunch of other games released just then - but since I get to hear more and more warm words about I'll pick it up as soon as possible.
Can't neglect something that can seems to owe up to the title "Classic" you know.
Edit; Have any of you happen to play this wonderfull little game called "Gigant Citizen Kabuto"? Brittish humour, for that time new game play elements and slightly wierd family tale packed in one box. |

Yes your very right about 'Farenheit' re: the ending, similar to good films/movies as far as that goes eh. Still i had had enough at that point -of wanting to see the end- so it suited me. There is a follow-up in the making.
Oh ho,ho. 'Giants' was/is utter insanity! (yes i own it) i love the pi$$ take of the Scottish accent -yes i'm a scot as you can see- they got that down to a tee!! So full of originality, what more can you say.
You've got class, nice to meet a guy that enjoys quality I've been in the PC game for 11-12years and played games like '7th Guest','Shivers',Simon the Sorceror 1 & 2 (3 was/is crappo!) 'Blade Runner' even 'Under a Killing Moon'. Mention games like those to folks and they go '?'
Last i looked i had 300 going on 400 PC games of all generes. I truly love games that are well put together, like playing a book!
Now of course it get's harder but there's no doubt that even the <cough> PS2 has some very cleverly witten classics that wont make a PC anytime soon; 'Ico','Forbidden Siren','Shadow of the Colosus and even the 'Silent Hill' series are amazing to me (clever japanese -nothing new there eh?) |

Thanks - it's equally fun to meet someone who share ones taste of the more...exquisite of gaming - so to speak. (And Simon 3 did suck)
I haven't counted my games for long but I'm increadibly picky about what I put in my collection but around 200 games - all in all (without checking) true gems.
I acctually have this agitade interest in japanease games so Ico, Forbidden, Xenogears (I must mention Xeongears - such a great game) , and of course - the monstrosity of a masterpiece that is Shadow of the Colossus.
I think that the epitome of 2005 year's total experience and fun in gaming was meet and squashed at the very moment I sat almost with tears in my eyes before Shadow of the Colossos... *Brr* It was, and still is like being 5 years old and everything is new when you just sit there and watch the game.
Close to my heart we also have pics of the Final Fantasy series - Sephiroth in the flames of Nibielheim is as increadibly chilling and cool as it was the first time.
I digress, but I'm with you on the book part it's what drives me to play a game and ultimetly find those wonderful masterpices or short of masterpices; just wonderful experiences.
To continue offtopic or whatever we are doing; How are you on the RTS front? Two of the most precious of games I can find regarding what they ment, still mean and how they affected me; Total Annihilation - the overlord of true mass warfare (Kingdoms sucked) and Homeworld... Oh Homeworld... brilliant in EVERY ASPECT.
Sorry to drag on |

Honeslty, I'd like to see a picture of your 400 pc games.
I'd imagine at the time of Killing Moon and Blade Runner you were getting them ripped. Games were a synch to rip back then or had stupid code wheels and things. I remember renting them and spending a few hours copying by hand those intricate protection schemes. I have a tremendous amount of games. I have my original Rise of the Triad box! Only recently I threw out all my 5 1/4 disks from 80's and before!
At the same time you need to remember that there are a hell of a lot more gamers these days and a lot more games then there was back then. With such a immense selection of games these days people are so spread out. When internet gaming took off it just spread people more.
I don't think anyone has 'class' because they played something you did. You mention Quality games, quality, in your opinion. I think you forget obvious 'facts of the time' of release of those games. |

I've probably got close to 300 or so as well, excluding all the Abandonware, which isn't actually that big a number.
I have a rediculously large retro gaming collection though.
hrm, let's see what I'm playing.
Shadow Of Colossus again, for the 5th time on Hard Mode.
Fallout 2 (with the unofficial patches)
BFME 2
Rollercoaster Tycoon 3
Oblivion with Oscuro's 1.3 patch
Unreal Tournament (the original and best)
System Shock 2 (with the texture mods and balancing fixes)
Bounty Bob Strikes Back on the Commodore 64.
Still trying to complete Exile on the Commodore Amiga after so long.
I intend on playing the Silent Hill series through again just so my girlfriend can experience the true horror of it all
Safer, I complete agree about Xenogears, I played it straight after completing FF7 and loved it to bits
You should try getting hold of the Yasunori Mitsuda & Millennial recording of the Xenogears music, truely excellent studio renditions of the in-game music. |

devilhood; I do have the recordings Great music fan of both Mitsuda, Kō Ōtani (The guy who wrote the soundtrack for SoTC) and Uematsu - while I do have a pretty big collection of CD's I have imported, now most of the music I have moved to digital form (FLAC) or have as images - a bit more hasselfree I think.
Tetsuya Takahashi - the creator of Xeongears also wrote the script for Xenosaga (which I'm currently playing through due to some problems getting them imported) has himself noted that the scrips meant for a 5 part series was considerbly cut only to 3 which I have noted since things feel a bit "compact" even in the first episod.
Yet I love the subtle the Nietzchan title; Der Wille zur Macht - the Will to Power. |
