Wondering if
The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion truly takes advantage of dual-core processors? And if so, by how much? Does L2 cache size play a role in performance, and what clock speeds yield the biggest performance improvements? The chaps over at
Firing Squad checked how 10 different Athlon 64, FX, and X2 proc

Well,well considering i play 1600x1200 with an Athlon64 3500+ and BFG 7800GT OC, those figures don't surprise me one bit!
I play everything on FULL & HDR except outdoor shadows (2 clicks off bottom) and shadows on grass (off) and i'm getting around 27fps in the densest areas in the mountains. In caves it's 85+fps.
If you *definately* have a SM3.0 card,look in your My docs/my games/Oblivion/Oblivion Config look for the line; bAllow30Shaders=0
It will most likely be off. Change the 0 to 1 and save it. I did and what a difference in areas that used SM3.0 (not all areas do, but you will notice them!!)
Also if you want amazing reflective water change the lines in the same config file to:
bUseWaterReflectionsMisc=1
bUseWaterReflectionsStatics=1
bUseWaterReflectionsTrees=1
bUseWaterReflectionsActors=1
bUseWaterReflections=1
bUseWaterHiRes=1
bUseWaterDisplacements=1
bUseWaterShader=1
Bearing in mind i have a GeForce 7800GT, i don't know what performance hit you may get ,so make a back-up of the config file just in case!
Also if you have a sluggish mouse at high resolutions (using nVidia cards) it may not be your hardware! I read about downloading 'Coolbits' and changing the D3D setting of 'render 3 frames ahead' to either 1 or 0 and it bloody well worked!! No more sluggish mouse |

| yeah I can run @ 1280x1024 'now' pretty much high settings, i turn off self shadows cuz there seems to be a issue with that. As well, shadows on grass is disabled, otherwise everything is pretty cranked. I use the nVidia Ultra drivers(custom) as it gives me the coolbits stuff all included.. I beat all the stats I've seen so far that include my 7600 at least.. |
