An XDA writer upgraded his NAS to 10 Gigabit Ethernet and quickly found the real bottleneck was not the network.
With only two 20TB hard drives running in SHR (RAID 1 mirror), write speeds topped out around 259â??290 MB/s â?? just a fraction of 10GbE capacity.

That is a VERY low write speed for a NAS in RAID 1.
Possible causes:
- your host is just bad (some cheap foreign shite),
- you use only two disks,
- the disks used are slow (e.g., some old HDDs from laptops or something)
- your RAID controller is faulty,
- the array is degraded (unlikely because RAID 1 does not care about losing data),
- or something.
My RAID 6 - which is much slower than RAID 1 - can write 300-400MB/sec, locally. I say 'locally' because I don't have 10GbE to drive it via network -> I can test speed only locally.
When I tested the disks one by one, they could write 100MB/sec random and 250 MB/sec each, alone. Ok, these are WD Ultradrive drives, but take any 8 stupid drive that can do 50-70 in RAID and the speed will multiply to 400+.
On RAID 1, done properly, you should be getting >1000MB/sec speeds.
It's funny how people with zero intelligence can always afford these things while the rest of us... Nevermind.
All in all, I think the author failed, no need to blame technology. |
