The latest issue of Computer Gaming World (thanks EvilAvatar) contains an extensive preview of Enemy Territory: Quake Wars, the upcoming multiplayer first-person by shooter by Splash Damage. Here are some highlights: Megatextures. Technology that will allow textures to determine how an object acts. Pai

Lack of a Bot enabled single player is a bad move. Sure there is little use to it but any serious gamer would like to run around maps and perhaps do it under fire from bots before going online and looking like a tit.

Still, I guess it does mean anyone that buys the game is going to be buying it for online, if Splash/id screw up anything this time round they won't have a single player game to fall back on.

Only single game type is a bit dissapointing. I realise many of the older ones again probably wouldn't see much use but for added value and a few more maps it would be nice to see a CTF, KOTH, Capture thrown into the bargain.

Still the payoff might be that they've made it nice and easy to mod in gametypes and gfx so the community can handle this on their own without the need to build for months and months.

Can't wait to see megatexture in action and I'll be dreaming of a Team Arena and RTCW TC mods which this engine seems to be ideal for.

Well RTCW didn't have bots, ET didn't have bots. Quake3 was NOT a failure despite it's lack of singleplayer. So what gives? I think this game is gonna be a kickass action. Game modes? RTCW had single game mode, ET also. There is LMS, but where's the fun in that? I like the line in the news clip: "Leave your flags at home". Well thank g0d. Play UT, UT2004,5,6,7... Q3 or whatever if you still want to play CTF.

Oh and RTCW and ETboth got GOTY awards.

All true, I wouldn't disagree. You could also say the battlefield series hasn't had single player either so its perhaps a moot point. There is still a very real risk though that it will fail in the saturated FPS market because it doesn't have single player to prop up the sales.

Likewise gamemodes, a big turn off for me in BF is that I just can't get on with that gamemode. I understand many are similarly turned off by CTF/TDM/DM etc, but it would be nice if the choice was there from the off.

Still as I said, I hope SD are just as forthcoming with helping mod and map makers as they were with ET and the community builds on a solid base.

I hope ET:QW is excellent and look forward to getting my hands on it. The above points won't stop me from buying it, I only mention them and I think the article did because they might have an effect on sales for less accepting gamers.

I just hope with a couple of previews being posted recently that the release date is going to be early next year.

No bots = relatively quick death.

Just my personal opinion but I cant see it doing spectacular sales, at least with bots you can have fun at small LAN's but with something like this its useless unless your home net can accommodate 6-12 people sharing the connection for online play. I don’t see myself or the 20ish other people I regularly LAN with wasting our cash on this, we learned to be more suspicious after the BF2 rip-off.
