NVIDIA GeForce3 Explained - tech
|
| (hx) 11:04 PM CEST - Jun,05 2001 |
NVIDIA's GeForce3 has arguably been the most anticipated and breakthrough card since the Voodoo2 line from 3dfx. The whole reasoning behind this lies on the fact that the card is not just another GeForce. It is a new breed of card and offers much more than just additional horsepower. Since the days of the TNT cards, NVIDIA has been moving up in ranks in terms of video performance. One day did exist when 3dfx was the way to go and any other was just cheating yourself. That day has passed and today, 3dfx is no more and NVIDIA rules the skies. The arrival of the TNT2 and it's Ultra cousin began to show weaknesses in 3dfx's Voodoo3 card, but with the existence of a little API known as Glide, 3dfx was able to continue on. With the arrival of the GeForce 256, 3dfx was in trouble, as was any other competitor in the consumer video card market. The Voodoo4/5 boards were delayed and the GeForce was out. With Glide on it's way out, things were looking slim for 3dfx. The constant onslaught of NVIDIA's production provided the finishing touch. Any other contender would have to step up to the NVIDIA tidal wave and do it faster and better. Along came ATI, perhaps NVIDIA's largest consumer graphics competitor at present day. With ATI heavy on their trail, NVIDIA's projected 6-month release cycle may not be dead on, but it's close enough to it's time frame to keep the pressure on any competitors. The spawned releases of the GeForce2, the much loved cousin, Ultra and the other fine flavors of the Pro and the MX variety brought a wide range of products, varying in performance and price, to the world. NVIDIA's recipe seemed to be working and now there is yet a new king, the GeForce3.
