  • Dabber exploits Sasser flaw - Virus writers have created a worm that exploits coding flaws in the infamous Sasser worm to spread. Dabber uses a flaw in the FTP server component of the Sasser worm. The worm will only infect users already infected by Sasser, according to security services firm LURHQ. Dabber scans for Sasser-infected hosts on port 5554. When it finds infected PCs it uses code from a Sasser-FTP exploit developed by "mandragore" of the Romanian Security Research team to seize control of PCs. Dabber than installs itself and deletes the registry keys of Sasser and other viruses. It creates a backdoor on infected machines on TCP port 9898 allowing hackers to download additional code, which might be far more malicious than Dabber itself. To remove Dabber LURHQ advises users to kill the package.exe process using the Windows Task Manager. Remove the "sassfix" registry key. Delete package.exe from the Windows system directory and all start-up folders.
  • Feds target P2P child porn - More than 65 people have been arrested as a result of more than 350 searches of computers and computer equipment, the agencies said Friday. Popular file-swapping companies quickly chimed in, saying they had supported the investigation, which was code-named Operation Peer Pressure by the FBI.
  • XP SP2 good news for home users - Microsoft is hoping that Windows XP Service Pack 2 will make life more difficult for hackers and spammers. The software is currently at 'candidate one' release stage, as Microsoft decides on the user interface and finalises some of the latest measures to block virus propagation.
  • Off-topic: Flying Car more economical than SUV - The M400 needs 35 clear feet to take off but thanks to its 770 hp engine can whiz to 365 mph - cruise control kicks in at 326 mph - and climb at 6,400 feet per minute. You may hear it before you see it: it emits a rather noisy 65 dba at 500 feet. Interestingly, with a fuel consumption of 20 miles to the gallon on the road, it's rather more economical than a Sports Utility Vehicle (SUV) and looks positively eco-friendly compared to a Hummer.
  • Off-topic: Private rocket ship sets altitude record - SpaceCraftOne, flown by 62-year-old Mike Melvill, reached altitude of 65,000 metres at about 1600 GMT. The altitude is a new record for a private vehicle. NASA awards astronaut status to anyone who reaches an altitude of 50 miles (80,500 metres). SpaceCraftOne (SS1)was carried into the air attached to the belly of a larger aircraft called White Knight, also flown in this test by a solo pilot. SS1 detaches at about 15,000 metres before blasting towards space using its own rocket engine.
  • Gamers Worldwide Take a Shot at the Shanghai ACON4 LAN Madness - THG's latest coverage of the qualifying LAN heats for the ACON4 World finals takes us to eastern and northern Europe.
  • Sony launches world's smallest Windows XP PC - Japanese electronics giant Sony unveiled the world's smallest personal computer that runs on Microsoft's Windows XP operating system. The handheld gadget called "type U," a new product in Sony's VAIO series, weighs only 550 grams (19.3 ounces) and measures 167 millimeters (6.7 inches) in width and is 108 millimeters high, the company said. Priced at 209,790 yen (1,873 dollars) including Japanese sales tax, the type U will hit the local market at the end of May.
  • Prescott P4 chips may not be mainstream till mid-2005 despite price cuts - Despite Intel’s aggressive price reductions on 90nm P4 chips, Taiwan motherboard makers believe the Prescott chip will not hit the mainstream until mid-2005, according to sources at Taiwan motherboard makers.
  • Intel Updates Specs for Unannounced Chipsets - Intel announced specification change for the yet unannounced chipsets E7320, E7520, E7525. The spec modification is pretty strange, as the core-logic sets code-named Tumwater and Lindenhurst are not officially unveiled yet. The yet unannounced E7520, E7320 and E7525 MCH chips have undergone certain changes that are reflected in C2 stepping, the version of the chips that is more mature compared to the C1 presumably available now at hands of mainboard producers. The C2 revision is pin-to-pin compatible with the C1 and does not require any regression testing or mainboard re-design, according to the information spread among Intel’s partners on Friday.
  • First Tests of Intel's New Pentium M - Intel expands its mobile CPU power this week with the release of three fast new models of its Pentium M processor, formerly code-named Dothan. The first notebooks to run the new chips post about a 10 percent jump over comparable older models. The chips are featured in four new notebooks from Dell, Gateway, Hewlett-Packard, and IBM. The notebooks blazed through early tests and also offer the same top-notch battery life typical of the Pentium M family. The new Pentium Ms come in speeds of 1.7 GHz, 1.8 GHz, and 2 GHz, and boast several improvements over the last generation of Pentium Ms. Most notable is a larger level 2 cache--2MB, up from 1MB. They're also the first to bear Intel's new naming scheme for processors, which replaces clock speed with a processor model number.
  • Two Xeon CPUs Are Better Than One Intel P4 Extreme Platform - Who would have thought? A Dual Xeon system is often cheaper and frequently offers higher performance than a Pentium 4 Extreme platform. THG analysis and benchmark tests for Intel's dual-processor E7505/Placer chipset show why.
  • NVIDIA and ATI: Image Quality and CPU Scaling Performance - In  terms of performance, we have somewhat mixed results. For the $399 range, the GeForce 6800 GT narrowly edges out the Radeon X800 Pro for the performance crown. In contrast, the $499 Radeon X800 XT Platinum Edition narrowly wins over the GeForce 6800 Ultra and Ultra OC. In each case, the margin of victory was very slim and was contingent on a few critical aspects.
  • ATI's Radeon X800 PRO review - It may pay to see what NVIDIA have to offer in the same price range and we'll be evaluating 6800GT performance in the near future, but in isolation against the ATI products that sit above and below it, the X800 PRO is highly recommended if you have the money to spend.
  • 8X Dual-Format DVD Recorders round-up- To keep you on pace with these shakeups, PCMag has rounded up five of the fastest recorders to hit the market yet: 8X dual-format DVD recorders.
  • Asus DRW-0804P review - Like the Pioneer drive it's based on, the DRW-0804P can write to both DVD-R and DVD+R media at 8x. At this speed, the drive was able to write 4GB of data in less than 8 minutes. While we've seen a few 8x DVD writers that can do it in less time, they are few are far between. Unfortunately, the DRW-0804P's performance was not as impressive when writing to DVD±R and DVD±RW media at 4x. For whatever reason, the drive took longer than normal to complete its calibration tests, increasing the overall writing time. Of course, this long calibration also ensured that the DRW-0804P's writing quality was very good. However, there is still room for improvement, especially with Verbatim's 8x DVD-R media.
  • Time Platina Athlon 64 Laptop review - It's a capable gamers laptop without breaking the bank, close to being the ultimate LAN party toy if it weren't for the lacklustre screen. The hard disk is quiet and HDTach confirms it as fairly fast.

  • Cooling Athlon 64: Three Potential Solutions - Sudhian has posted a review on three potential cooling solutions for the Athlon 64.
  • Understanding NetBIOS and Windows Server 2003  - Everyone hates NetBIOS, so why is it still around? Microsoft adopted it in the late 1980s for their LAN Manager product and it found its way into early versions of Windows and from there into Windows NT. And it's still present (and turned on by default) in Windows 2000, Windows XP, and Windows Server 2003 because many corporate networks still have legacy (Windows 9x or Windows NT) machines on their network. These machines need NetBIOS to function properly on a network because they use NetBIOS to logon to domains, find one another, and establish sessions for accessing shared resources.

One of the new features in Windows(tm) XP(tm) SP2 will be forum-spam blocking. For example, on www.ggmania.com, anyone posting with the username "idiot", "fx5900", "madhatter@hotmail", and "" will have their posts blocked! Also, any post with the keywords "nvidia" or "ati" will be prohibited. This is fantastic news, is it not?
