  • Microsoft: SP2 Will Not Install on Pirated Copies of XP - Contrary to the remarks it made to the ComputerTimes, Microsoft now claims that it will not permit users who have obtained Windows XP illegally to upgrade to its latest service release. Instead, the software giant will continue to enforce compliance with its licensing. In a nutshell, Microsoft group product manager Barry Goffe told ComputerTimes that Windows XP Service Pack 2 would not exclude pirated copies from upgrading, and that it was more important to keep user safe than to be "concerned about the revenue issue." To clarify its position, a Microsoft spokesperson told BetaNews, "Press reports indicating Windows XP Service Pack 2 will install on pirated or illegal copies of Windows XP are not entirely true. Prior to installing, SP2 will check the OS' product ID (PID) against a list of known pirated PIDs. If a PID is found to be invalid, SP2 will not install."
  • Microsoft Reward Program Plays Role in Arrest - On Saturday, Microsoft verified that its antivirus reward program, through which the company has pledged $5 million in reward money for information leading to the capture and conviction of electronic attackers, played a role in the capture of the Sasser worm's alleged author. The attacker created all four variants of the worm, which afflicted millions of computers last week. Microsoft commended law enforcement officers in Rotenburg, Germany, for the capture of the accused attacker, an 18-year-old teenager who allegedly also created the Netsky worm.
  • Microsoft patches new Windows flaw - Microsoft on Tuesday detailed a new vulnerability in Windows XP and Windows Server 2003 that could enable an attacker to remotely execute malicious code. The software maker described the problem as "important," its second-highest rating for such problems. Antivirus software maker Symantec, meanwhile, characterized the vulnerability as "high risk," citing the impact that there could be if the vulnerability was successfully exploited.
  • [!] Mydoom and Doomjuice Worm Variants details - Variants of the Mydoom worm, known as Doomjuice.A and Doomjuice.B, are currently spreading to computers that were already infected with Mydoom.A. Customers who have successfully removed Mydoom.A from their computers are not at risk for infection by Doomjuice. The Mydoom.A worm installs a "back door" on infected computers,0. which virus writers can use to gain access to your PC. Microsoft urges you to take action to remove these worms and help keep your computer safe from malicious intrusions.
  • Sasser F blames it on Bill -  A new variant of Sasser, apparently authored by one 'Bill Gate', has been spotted on European networks this afternoon.
Sasser F is virtually identical to the previous five versions of the worm, and spreads via a flaw in unpatched Windows operating systems

  • Anonymous file-swapping programmer arrested - A professor at Tokyo University in Japan has been arrested and charged with copyright offences after developing a computer program that promises to let users share files with anonymity. Isamu Kaneko, a 33-year-old academic, wrote a file-sharing program called "Winny". This promises users the ability to share audio and video files through a network built on top of ordinary internet traffic, but without revealing network address of their computer to other users. Kaneko was arrested on suspicion of offering copyrighted material for download through the program himself. In Japan, violating copyright law can be punished with a maximum sentence of three years in prison or a fine of up to 3 million yen ($27,000). A survey carried out by the Japan's Association of Copyright for Computer Software suggests that Winny is used by around 250,000 people in Japan.

  • 1.67 million Brits download films illegally in 2003 - Illegal UK downloads of films and TV via the Internet have tripled over the past year, the British Video Association (BVA) estimates. This apparently cost the UK video business L45m in DVD sales alone during 2003. 1.67m miscreants indulged in the practice last year, compared to 570,000 in 2002.

  • Talking capacitors could blab to code breakers - The sounds made by capacitors on motherboards might, in theory, give attackers code-breaking clues in much the same way electro-magnetic leakage or power fluctuations can be used in so-called "side-channel" attacks on secure systems. These kinds of attacks are well beyond the capability of your average hacker but they do have applications in the design of tamper-resistant systems. The research shows that cryptanalysts are prepared to think of any possible attack vector in their quest to ensure cryptographic systems remain secure.
  • Modding The Xbox Into The Ultimate Multimedia Center - Like a teenage kid with a genius IQ who is addicted to video games, Microsoft's Xbox offers a lot of untapped potential. THG downloads a version of Xbox Media Center software and installs it on an Xbox mod from FriendTech to show just what the game console is capable of.
  • Nintendo unveiling a new portable - The DS will sell alongside today's Game Boy Advance, not replace it, according to the company. Nintendo has not announced a release date or price, though analysts predict it may sell in the $150 range. One of the two 3-inch screens is touch-sensitive and works with a stylus — like Palms and Pocket PCs — to control the action in some games. In one demo, players guide a toddler-age Mario as he falls from the sky by drawing clouds. Other games give multiple views of the action. The DS also has Bluetooth wireless communication to connect with other units within range for cordless competition. DS has separate slots for current Game Boy Advance cartridges and new, smaller DS game cards. DS is largely viewed as Nintendo's response to Sony's PlayStation Portable, or PSP, a new system that will play both movies and video games stored on mini DVD discs. Sony has announced plans to release PSP in Japan later this year and in the USA in 2005. Another article can be found here.
  • Infinium to launch $199 Athlon XP console 18 Nov - Infinium Labs will finally launch its long-awaited broadband-based online gaming service on 18 November, the company said today. And it will attempt to attract punters by offering free consoles to anyone who coughs up for a two-year subscription to the service. The console will is based on an AMD Athlon XP 2500+ and contains a 40GB hard drive, 256MB of memory TV output and broadband Internet feed. The graphics come courtesy of an Nvidia GeForce FX 5700 Ultra ship. Nvidia also supplies the nForce 2 400 Ultra chipset on which the console is based. The box, which clearly amounts to little more than a low-end PC, will retail for $199, Infinium said. The Phantom Games Service costs $29.95 a month, and if you sign up for a 24-month period, you'll get your Athlon XP box for free.
  • [!] Sony Drops PS2 To $149! - Sony Corp. on Tuesday cut the price of its leading PlayStation 2 video game console to $149, putting it in line with Microsoft Corp.'s Xbox whose sales soared recently following a similar move. Sony said it would quickly start promoting the new price, which applies to both its stand-alone PS2, which had been $179, and the PS2 bundled with a networking adapter, which was $199.
  • Apple Releases Major iTunes Update - Apple has released iTunes 4.5 (and iPod software 2.2 and QuickTime 6.5.1) and relaxed some iTunes Music Store restrictions: now tracks you purchased can be authorized to play on up to five other computers, instead of three.  (thanks Slasdot.org)
  • Sharp Camera Phone Adds Zoom - Sharp is unveiling a cell phone handset that comes closer than any other phone to duplicating the functions of a standard digital still camera. The V602SH handset will go on sale in Japan in late June this year through Vodafone. It combines a 2-megapixel CCD image sensor and optical zoom. A 2X optical zoom can be realized with a single button push when the phone is in digital camera mode, while a second push returns it to no zoom. Positions between these two settings are not available.
  • Nvidia ships TV, PVR cards to US, Europe - Nvidia has launched its latest alternative to arch-rival ATI's All-in-Wonder series of graphics cards, this one based on its GeForce FX 5700 graphics chip. The Personal Cinema FX 5700 essentially combines the usual 3D graphics technology with a software bundle pitched at more video-oriented users than the gamers the company's other products target. The card contains a TV tuner module which links to Nvidia's playback software and its TiVO-style personal video recorder code. There's an FM radio in there too. All of it can be operated using a remote control and bundled USB-connected receiver.
  • Intel Possibly Added 1066MHz Quad Pumped Bus into the Roadmap - Intel is going to unleash a yet another version of Pentium 4 Extreme Edition processor clocked at 3.46GHz with 1066MHz Quad Pumped Bus in the Q3 2004. There is currently no precise information about the sizes of L2 and L3 caches for the part, but one of pretty logical assumptions are 512KB and 2MB of level-two and level-three respectively. The chip is likely to come in LGA775 packaging.
  • Microtek ScanMaker i320 First Look - The Microtek ScanMaker i320 is an impressive flatbed scanner that handles most basics quickly and with good results. The i320 also does a decent job with slides and restores old and damaged photos so well that it's worth getting for just that one feature. The claimed 3,200 dpi optical by 6,400 mechanical resolution is higher than you'll likely ever need, with the possible exception of slide scans. But we're more impressed with Microtek's implementation of Kodak's Digital ICE technology and Microtek's own ColoRescue features. These are just the ticket for faded, damaged photos that hold great sentimental value.
  • Kernel 2.6.6 Final - Linux Kernel has been updated once again with few patches and made the official stable release.
  • NetCaptor 7.5.1 Gold - NetCaptor (download) is the most powerful web browser on the planet! Other browsers only show one page at a time or squish them together in an overlapping mess

  • McAfee AVERT Stinger 2.2.6  - Stinger is a stand-alone utility used to detect and remove specific viruses. It is not a substitute for full anti-virus protection, but rather a tool to assist administrators and users when dealing with an infected system. Stinger utilizes next generation scan engine technology, including process scanning, digitally signed DAT files, and scan performance optimizations.
  • Kerio Personal Firewall 4.1.0 Beta 1 - Kerio Personal Firewall (KPF) /download/ helps users control how their computers exchange data with other computers on the Internet or local network.
  • Deleted File Analysis Utility v2.5 - This freeware for Windows NT/2000/XP can scan your hard drive partitions and list all deleted files that may still be recoverable.
  • PearPC 0.1 released - PearPC is an architecture independent PowerPC platform emulator capable of running most PowerPC operating systems. Due to the nature of emulation, PearPC is quite slow (the client will run about 500 times slower than the host).
  • ATi Radeon Beta Catalyst 4.5  - This is the ATi Radeon X800 Driver, Leaked version 6.14.10.6444 Normally this driver would have only worked on x800 graphics cards. Yet FrancoisC modified the .ini files, we merged the two and now they work with all Radeon graphics cards. (thanks BloodUK)
