  • Historic photo archive available on the Web - A collection of more than 12 million photographs, capturing scenes from the Boer War to the D-Day landings, was published on the Internet yesterday. The images, which date back to the turn of the 20th century, have been captured from the archives of the British Pathé newsreel, a cinema news service that predated television. The unique collection has been created by rescanning every inch of the archive's 3,500 hours of 35mm film.
  • Martial arts robots hit Asian tech fair  - Humanoid robots capable of performing somersaults and complex martial arts moves were demonstrated at Asia's largest electronics and computing fair in Tokyo on Saturday. Visitors to CEATEC 2003 met Morph3, a human-like robot about 30-centimetres tall developed by researchers at the Chiba Institute of Technology in Japan. It can perform back flips and karate moves thanks to 138 pressure sensors, 30 different onboard motors and 14 computer processors.
  • Super-Radar, Done Dirt Cheap  - Any technology can be a two-edged sword. Cell phones are a good example. They're clearly a great convenience, even a life-saving tool during natural disasters and medical emergencies. And they should save many more lives under the Federal Communications Commission's enhanced 911 mandate, which requires that cell phones relay their precise locations to 911 operators.
  • Israel slams the door on Microsoft - The Israeli Ministry of Commerce has suspended all governmental contracts with Microsoft, and indicated that the ban will last throughout 2004. The de facto suspension means no upgrades for the duration, at a time when Microsoft is looking to roll out its Office 2003 upgrade; and the Ministry is said to be examining OpenOffice as an alternative. It's a consequence of a much-anticipated legal verdict: Israeli Antitrust Authority director general Dror Strum has finally acknowledged that Microsoft is a monopoly.
  • A Storage Tank Like No Other  - IBM's new data storage system, codenamed Storage Tank, is designed for the most voracious data warehouser. Storage Tank uses software to link servers in multiple locations over an IP network, creating a sort of mega-server capable of connecting thousands of computers and processing multiple petabytes of data. Storage Tank also makes a distributed storage network look and behave just like a local network. No matter where or on what operating system any piece of stored data might reside, it can be located quickly and used by anyone else on the network.
  • China Gets on the Grid - The China Education and Research Grid, which is being built in conjunction with IBM, will have a computational power of 6 trillion FLOPS by 2005, according to IBM. This number is expected to eventually increase to 15 trillion FLOPS, making the China grid one of the largest grids in the world.
  • Intel Tejas delayed until 2005 - Intel's 'Tejas' processor, the successor to the as-yet-unreleased 'Prescott', will now not be released until 2005 rather than late next year. However, the 130nm Northwood core Pentium 4 won't last as long as previously planned. The shift is a result of the 90nm Prescott being moved back from Q4 2003 to Q1 2004. Last August, Intel was saying 3.2GHz and 3.4GHz Prescotts would be shipping in volume in the current quarter.
  • Motorola Expands Into Flat-Screen TV Business - Mobile phone giant Motorola Inc has signed a deal with a Hong Kong firm to make flat-screen televisions and computer displays, adding another player to the fast-growing industry. Analysts expected global demand for liquid crystal display (LCD) TVs to hit 31.9 million units by 2007, compared with 1.7 million units in 2002.
  • 3-D Without the Glasses  - The Sharp Actius RD3D is the first 3-D notebook ($3.299) that does not require special glasses; Sharp's 3-D TFT display controls the way light leaves the screen so that left and right eyes see separate images that composite into one 3-D whole. The display can also be switched to a standard 2-D for normal viewing. The notebook comes equipped with the nVidia GeForce 4 440 Go graphics processor and the 2.8-GHz Pentium 4 processor to power the 3-D applications. Sharp is bundling three titles with the RD3D: James Bond 007: Nightfire, Tiger Woods PGA Tour 2003, and Need For Speed Hot Pursuit
  • Acer presents Ferrari 3000 notebook - Acer, an official supplier to the Scuderia Ferrari racing team, has introduced a limited edition Ferrari 3000 notebook featuring a 15-inch display, according to the company. Powered by an Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) processor, the Ferrari 3000 will adopt the ATI Radeon mobility 9200 graphics solution, 128MB video memory, 512MB DDR RAM, 60GB hard drive and a DVD-Dual drive. It will also support wireless connectivity (IEEE 802.11g and Bluetooth) and standard LAN and modem connections. Other features include an IEEE 1394 interface and 4-in-1 memory card reader, according to Acer. The Ferrari 3000 is expected to be priced at about US$1,999 and will be available through Acer's channel retail stores worldwide in November.
  • Pioneer Amplifies Windows Media 9 - The amplifier, the VSA-AX10Ai-N, can play back Windows Media 9 Professional-encoded files when connected to a personal computer using the Sony/Philips Digital Interface, according to the statement. This is a digital interface format that can be used to stream digital audio data between two supporting devices without the usual conversion to analog. This means no data is lost in conversion and also copy-protection information is not discarded.
  • Cheap Leadtek WinFast A350 TDH LX - A new model from Leadtek that we obtained for our lab tests - WinFast A350 TDH LX - excited our keen interest due to its rather nice features at the relatively low price. Priced $100 less than usual FX5900 products, i.e. about $300 just has some slower memory, but the same 5900 GPU! But Digit-Life tests indicated that overclocking can provide you speed comparable with GeForce FX5900 cards.
  • Radeon 9800XT review - The Radeon 9800 XT features a clock speed of 416MHz up from 380MHz of the Radeon 9800 Pro and 325MHz of the Radeon 9700 Pro. Through heavy testing and refinement of their .15 micron process they've been able to increase the clock speed with their latest part comfortably and additionally a memory clock speed of 365MHz. • Ximeta Netdisk 80GB review - The Ximeta NetDisk retails for $199 but can be found for as little as $179 online. The product comes packaged in a full retail box, which is surprising as the drive is not really aimed at the retail sector. According to reader comments, there''s ONE huge problem: When in NDAS mode, only ONE workstation can use (both read&write) the drive at a time. If you want to share the drive, the other workstation has to use the system tray utility to switch to read-only mode, then you use the system tray utility to switch to read-write.

Israel slams the door on Microsoft - every country should do that. Someone said a couple of years back that MS will take over the world. You don't actually know what backdoors they have open all over the world by now...
