- Security head accused of "hack and tell" - The head of security
firm Forensic Tec Solutions was arraigned Tuesday by federal prosecutors on
computer
crime
charges stemming from the company's intrusion into several government and
military computers last year. The company publicized the attacks in August
2002, telling The Washington Post that the ease with which the consultants
were able to breach the systems' security indicated flaws in the nation's most
sensitive computers.
- Brits pound OpenSSL bugs -
All
versions of OpenSSL up to and including 0.9.6j and 0.9.7b, and all
versions of SSLeay,
are open to the attacks: two of the holes can crash the software; a third
could lead to an attacker gaining control over vulnerable machines, although
the latter scenario remains undemonstrated, according to an advisory from the
OpenSSL Project, the collaborative effort that maintains the open-source
package. (thanks

- Media Center upgrade takes center stage - As expected, Microsoft on
Tuesday
launched Windows XP Media Center Edition 2004, an updated version of its
Media Center PC, and announced new partners for the operating system. Dell and
Sony joined the list of computer makers that offer Media. You can check some
review of Media Center 2004 at
WinSuperSite.
- ACDSee Shoots to Simplify Image Management -
New in version 6 are utilities that complete tasks that previously
required a separate application.
ACDSee 6, for example, can
burn CDs and DVDs from within the program, eliminating the need to open a
separate burning utility and compile a disc from files residing all over the
hard drive. The company also added a wizard--similar to what other image
management apps offer--that locates new image files from external sources such
as digital cameras, card readers, and scanners. ACDSee 6 works to further
streamline image management. You can now select images from different folders
and view them all in one window; and with the new Selective Browsing feature,
ACDSee can search through multiple folders and display all of the results in
the same window.
- Palm Refreshes Tungsten, Zire PDAs - Choosing a handheld is getting
tougher: Palm is releasing
two new corporate-oriented Tungsten models, plus the entry-level Zire 21.
All available now, the new models of personal digital assistants are the
high-end Tungsten T3, priced at $399, and the Tungsten E, priced at $199. The
updated Zire model, the Zire 21, has a faster processor and four times the
memory of its predecessor in the entry-level handhelds, but retains the $99
estimated street price.
- IBM Chip to Give Wireless Devices a Boost -
IBM is touting a new chip design it says will improve the performance of
wireless devices four times and reduce power consumption by up to 80 percent.
Key to the technology is IBM's ability to put transistors for both
communication and computing onto a single chip, according to the Armonk, N.Y.,
company. Currently they reside on separate chips - the communication on SiGe
(silicon germanium) bipolar chips and CMOS chips for computing.
- Chaintech launches smallest desktop PC - Chaintech has launched
the
notebook looking IMO-Desk. They assure you that this thing is a desktop,
and not a notebook because its CPU, HDD and memory is upgradeable.
- Notebook makers embrace wide-screen models - Following in the steps
of major brands like Dell and Hewlett-Packard (HP), many Taiwanese
notebook makers are set to launch new wide-screen models. The products
will be available by year-end, mostly in October or November, according to the
companies. When compared with regular-size panels, prices for 15.4-inch panels
are about US$20-30 higher than those for 15-inch XGA ones, and about US$10-15
higher than 15-inch SXGA panels, sources added.
- NVIDIA NV38 Launch Date Revealed - According to
X-bit labs, the next-generation NV38 GPU will be officially launched in 10
days, next Wednesday, on the 10th of October, 2003. The core-clock, however,
will lowered to 475MHz from the previously rumored 500MHz frequency.
- Toshiba to debut RD-XS41 DVD/Hard disk video recorder - Toshiba has
announced
on
October 1 it will start selling the RD-Style RD-XS41, a DVD recorder that
comes equipped with a 160GB hard disk. The new recorder can record up to 208
hours of video on the disk. The personal video recorder features Toshiba's 4x
DVD-R-enabled DVD Multi drive that supports DVD-RAM, DVD-R, and DVD-RW
formats. Its RD Engine incorporates newly designed hardware and software
architecture to enable users to playback and edit recorded video during
high-speed dubbing and recording operations. The product also offers 24x
disk-to-DVD-R recording capability.
