- Microsoft manager facing charges died of poisoning -
A Microsoft manager accused of stealing $9 million in software to fuel a
lavish lifestyle died from drinking antifreeze, according to the King
County Medical Examiner's Office. Daniel Feussner died Feb. 7 from ingesting
ethylene glycol, the main ingredient in antifreeze, according to the Medical
Examiner's Office. How it happened is unknown; there were no witnesses to his
death.
- Is Software Piracy Stealing Jobs? - Reducing software piracy by
just 10 percentage points worldwide
would generate 1.5 million jobs and add $400 billion to the world economy,
according to a study released Wednesday by the Business Software Alliance and
IDC. The BSA, composed of giant software vendors such as Microsoft, IBM, and
Apple Computer, pegs the percentage of software programs pirated globally at
40 percent. The IDC study, commissioned by the BSA, concludes that reducing
that rate to 30 percent would enable nations to add a total of $64 billion to
their tax coffers.
- Holes found in RealPlayer, QuickTime -
The
vulnerabilities have cropped up in RealNetworks' RealPlayer and Apple
Computer's QuickTime. While unrelated, the weak spots could allow an intruder
to execute damaging arbitrary code on a victim's computer.
- Eircom introduces 'low-cost' broadband -
I-stream Starter (EUR45) will offer guaranteed download speeds of 512kbs,
although upload rates may be slower for some customers, depending on a variety
of circumstances. The new service will be available to about 700,000 lines
around Ireland, Eircom said, extending to 1 million by year's end.
- Counter-Strike Goes To The Arcade - Namco has licensed the
popular Half-Life modification Counter-Strike for use in its new chain of
Ledzone entertainment centers, Impress Game Watch reports today. Namco's
original version of the game will be called "Counter-Strike Neo," and the
company plans to release a test version this month.
- Sony Shows a Smarter Robot - Sony unveiled
a new version of its Sony Dream Robot humanoid robot on Wednesday that, it
said, packs major increases in abilities and intelligence. Major changes in
the SDR-4X II have been made in four areas: The first is that of motion
control and, in particular, improvements to the robot's sensory functions so
that it can avoid falling down. Engineers have added an extra RISC CPU
(bringing the total count to three) to the SDR-4X II in order to handle speech
synthesis and speech recognition. Improvements have also been made in safety
and identification.
- Microsoft calls AMD X86-64 operating system Anvil -
Anvil will
run on both Opteron and Athlon64 chips and, the sources added, Microsoft
is billing it as causing a big adoption of PC 64-bit computing because these
chips will run 32-bit and 64-bit code natively.
- Office 2003 Configurations Unveiled - Microsoft plans to offer
a half dozen different editions of its upcoming Office 2003 productivity
suite, but none of them will include the new OneNote note-taking application.
And the company still isn't revealing pricing for the six different Office
2003 bundles or any of the stand-alone Office applications. All six versions
include the core Office applications of Word, Excel, and Outlook.
- AMD revs up transistor designs - The chipmaker's researchers have
created and demonstrated
a new
Fully Depleted Silicon-on-Insulator transistor, the company said
Wednesday. The silicon-on-insulator design technique uses special materials to
better isolate transistors inside a chip, with the aim of increasing
performance and reducing power consumption. AMD's twist on the transistor
design is as much as 30 percent faster than some of the best published results
seen so far, the company said.

- Nvidia and Quantum3D team up to bring graphics technology to the
battleground - Nvidia Corp., the maker of high-powered 3-D graphics
chips that are popular among players of shoot-'em-up PC games, is
bringing the same technology to the battlefield. Military hardware --
ranging from Apache helicopters and F-22 Raptor fighter jets to Bradley
fighting vehicles and M-1 Abrams tanks -- uses display systems powered by the
Santa Clara firm's graphics processors.
- ATI ships RADEON 9800 PRO - ATI
Technologies is now
shipping its RADEON 9800 PRO visual processing unit (VPU). Boards based on
the world's fastest VPU have shipped to OEM, retail, distribution and online
