  • "DVD Jon" faces new trial for piracy - A Norwegian court will retry a teen whose DVD-copying exploits made him a hero to hackers worldwide, in a case that will be closely monitored by Hollywood. In January, an Oslo court acquitted 19-year-old Jon Johansen of charges that he developed a computer program that enabled mass copying of movies on DVDs. Hollywood studios accused Johansen of developing the software and posting his findings on the Internet.
  • Hackers strike Georgia Tech computer, gain credit card data  - Computer hackers invaded a computer at Georgia Tech and copied names, addresses and -- in some cases -- credit card information for 57,000 patrons of the Ferst Center for the Arts. Tech said the database held credit card records for about two-thirds of the 57,000 people. Some cards had expired. The hackers had access to the computer between Feb. 4 and March 14, when the attack was discovered.
  • AMD, Fujitsu to merge Flash ops - AMD and Fujitsu have agreed to merge their Flash memory operations in a bid to mount a direct challenge to Intel's dominance of the market.  The two companies' Memorandum of Understanding - which will presumably require shareholder and regulatory authority approval before becoming a done deal - calls for the merger of Flash operations into a separate entity called FASL (Fujitsu AMD Semiconductor Limited), to be based in the US and Japan. FASL already exists as a 50:50 JV between the two companies. FASL was launched in 1993.
  • HP bundles ADSL modems with PCs - Hewlett Packard (HP) will begin bundling broadband modems with a number of its higher specification PCs. According to HP, the built in ADSL modems will not be added to the cost of the PC, saving the end user L50 to L80 on the price of signing up for a broadband connection. Although the modems offer broadband access through any ADSL provider, BT Openworld discs offering free broadband activation have been included in the offer.  The PCs, priced at L1,119 to L1,299, will go on sale in the next few weeks exclusively, for now, at PC World.
  • Intel ships prelude to desktop overhaul  - Intel came out with two new Celeron processors for desktops this week, a prelude to a slew of desktop technology coming in the next few months. The two new Celeron chips for bargain desktops run at 2.4GHz and 2.3GHz and cost $127 and $117 each, respectively, in 1,000 unit quantities.
  • Hitachi Unveils Do-It-All DVD/CD Recorder - Hitachi LG Data Storage has developed a new optical disc drive that can record on all types of recordable DVD and CD, the company announced Tuesday. The GSA-4040B can record to DVD-R and DVD+R discs at 4X speed, DVD-RW discs at 2X, DVD+RW at 2.4X, and DVD-RAM at 3X. It is also capable of recording to CD-R discs at 24X and CD-RW discs at 16X, according to the manufacturer. Read speeds are 12X for DVD-ROM, 3X for DVD-RAM, 10X for other writable and rewritable DVD formats, and 32X for CD-ROM.
  • Sony CliĆ© PEG-TG50 Review - The PEG-TG50 weighs 6.2 ounces and measures 4.9 by 2.8 by 0.6 inches (HWD) with its protective flip-cover installed. The PDA's application launch buttons and scroll dial are conveniently located directly below the excellent 320-by-320 backlit color screen. Because the jog dial, action dial, and Voice Recorder button are on the left panel, you can easily operate the PDA with one hand.

  • Duke Nukem 3D Source Code - As noted on the 3D Realms Website, the source code for Duke Nukem 3D is now available, as 3D Realms has chosen April Fool's Day to (no joke) release the source to the not-actually-3D build-engine game under terms of the GNU GPL. Mirror: 3DGamers.
