- Important: Critical Windows 2000 flaw
found -
Windows 2000 users need to patch (details)
their systems immediately to avoid hackers taking control, Microsoft has
warned. Users have discovered a flaw in the operating system's
implementation of the World Wide Web Distributed Authoring and Versioning
(WebDAV) protocol. WebDAV provides a standard for editing and file
management between computers on the internet using HTTP, and is commonly used
to manage web servers remotely. If a hacker sends a specially crafted
HTTP request to a server running IIS
they can either
shut down the server or cause it to run their code. The flaw is not
related to the new version of CodeRed II that also attacks IIS servers.
- Internet banking passwords stolen - The warning follows
a scam email being sent en masse to Australian internet users in an
attempt to steal their account passwords. The email, purporting to be an
official communication from the Commonwealth Bank, asks customers to
"reactivate" their account by logging in after a technology update. But the
website provided for customers to log onto, while similar to the bank's
website and including its security advice, is bogus.
- Dropping GameCube: Argos' turn? - Nintendo may be facing a
fight for its life at UK retail, as the decision by the Dixons group to
liquidate GameCube stocks is replicated by another leading retailer - high
street and catalogue sales outlet Argos. In an effort to clear existing stock
of the GameCube, Argos will be cutting the price of the system to an all-time
low of L78.99 - over L50 cheaper than Nintendo's SRP for the console, and
significantly lower than the L99 price point set by Dixons in its stock
clearance effort.
