GeForce FX Coverage - tech

After long weeks of impatient waiting, it has finally arrived.
NVIDIA has distributed
the
first GeForceFX FX 5800 Ultra cards to the press. But is it Good? Here
is the benchmark mania: (This post will be updated as reviews get linked)

NVIDIA takes the crown! No question about it - the GeForceFX 5800 Ultra is faster than the competition from ATI's Radeon 9700 PRO in the majority of the benchmarks. However, its lead is only slight, especially compared to the distance that ATI put between its Radeon 9700 PRO and the Ti 4600. Still, when compared to its predecessor, the GeForce4 Ti, the FX represents a giant step forward.

| Comments from JanSolo | posted - 05:20 AM CET - Jan,28 2003 | | These are actually pretty good results. I am going to buy it because 1. ATI is financially screwed (insider trading will get ya!) and 2. ATI is known for what seems like an endless parade of graphics bugs. Nvidia is known for their excellent drivers and are known to fix their bugs ASAP. ATI basically sits their and denies the bugs are theirs until they absolutely have to. See Carmack's notes on working with both companies. | |

I think the ati driver development team from ati does a very bad job at developing good drivers for their cards. Nvidia seems to have the art of the developing drivers mastered. Also, the inside trading incident will destroy Ati in the future. so yeah, you made me change my mind jansolo. but for now, i'm just going to wait and see what happens. I'm not going to jump in and buy the radeon 9700 pro right away. It depends on what happens, then i'll buy which ever card comes out on top. | |
| Comments from JanSolo | posted - 09:11 PM CET - Jan,28 2003 | | I cannot recall the specific game, but I remember seeing a ReadMe that came with an FPS that more or less said "we do not test on ATI cards so they are unsupported". People that think Nvidia is going away because of one missed product cylcles are fools. The bulk of where Nvidia makes their money is on the GeForce2 series: Vantas, MX, etc., selling to the OEMs. Consumer cards are nice sources of cash, but they probably make a ton more $$ on the low end OEM stuff and the XBox. | | The old comment system has been replaced.
