- LOTR - 'Two Towers' a seamless triumph -
The Two Towers" does not disappoint. This film is a fitting companion to
the astounding "The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring." It just
keeps getting better and better. If part three, the conclusion to this grand
adventure, maintains the same caliber -- and there seems no reason to think it
won't -- this trilogy will go down in cinematic history as a true masterpiece.
- New Virus Attacks Windows 2000, XP Machines - The virus was
discovered "in the wild" Monday. F-Secure has posted an advisory saying that
it has "no further information on what the worm does in addition to
spreading."
The Iraq_Oil virus is unlike many recent viruses that spread through
E-mail. According to F-Secure, this one scans the Internet for Windows 2000
and XP systems that have shared folders and aren't protected by a personal
firewall. If it's successful in guessing the password, the virus copies itself
to the system, usually in a file named iraq_oil.exe, then looks for new
systems to infect. The virus exploits the Windows Server Message Block
on Port 445, and F-Secure says most every personal firewall will protect
against this worm.
- SSH opens computers to attack -
Vulnerabilities have been found in multiple SSH implementations that could
allow an attacker to execute code or create a denial of service on servers and
clients, according to an advisory from CERT, a security alert service. The
vulnerabilities were located by security software company Rapid7 using an SSH
test suite named "SSHhredder", according to CERT. These include buffer
overflows and occur before a user is required to authenticate, meaning that
they are accessible to any attacker. The attacks would execute at the security
level at which the SSH process is running, which is normally a highly
privileged level -- System on Windows, and root on Unix systems.
- Windows XP Security Patch - An identified security vulnerability in
Windows XP could enable an attacker to compromise a user's Windows-based
computer and gain complete control over it, if the user visited the attacker's
web site or took other, less likely, actions. You can help protect your
computer from this and other identified security concerns
by installing this update.
- Ariane 4 Successfully Launches New Skies Satellite - An Ariane 44L
rocket successfully launched
New Skies Satellites' NSS-6 spacecraft Dec. 17 in the next-to-last Ariane
4 mission scheduled before the vehicle is retired in favor of the bigger
Ariane 5 vehicle. The 4,750-kilogram NSS-6 will provide Ku- and Ka-band
coverage over Asia, with 10 uplink spot beams in Ka-band -- a relatively
unused section of the radio spectrum -- to permit high-speed access to the
satellite from Ka-band antennas in several of the largest cities in China and
India, as well as Australia.
- Rayman Golf for Series 60 - Following the revival of Rayman on Palm
OS and Pocket PC platforms, the bouncy little creature doesn't seem to have
any problems keeping himself busy. Now, he's the star of yet another
Gameloft J2ME title -
somewhat
unexpectedly playing Golf on the Series 60 platform, which for the time
being is comprised entirely of the Nokia 7650 smartphone.
- Matsushita and Sony to Develop new Linux - Matsushita and Sony
today announced their agreement to work in partnership on the development of
an enhanced Linuxplatform for digital home electronic devices. As with
earlier versions of Linux, the newly developed source code will be publicized
freely under the General Public License (GPL), which permits free usage and
modification. This co-development program can further promote technological
advancement and wider application of Linux through free exchange of ideas
within the open source community.
- Exploring a 400MHz FSB for the VIA KT400 - No doubt,
buying the lower-end Athlon XP Thoroughbred processors is a very attractive
option. They are cheaper than their direct competitors (Intel Celeron) and
provide a higher performance. As to the overclocking, they are second to none
at that due to the possibility to unlock the multiplier easily (some shipment
lots come with the multiplier unlocked by default).

Win98/ME/ 2000/XP.
