  • Memory Stick breaks gigabyte barrier - Sony is close to unveiling a new, higher-capacity version of its popular Memory Stick removable flash memory card. But sources say it won't be compatible with some older devices. Expected to be announced at next month's Consumer Electronics Show, the new Memory Stick uses a different architecture to achieve higher capacities than the original card, sources said. Current Memory Stick cards top out at 128MB, but the new cards will come in 256MB, 512MB and 1GB capacities.
  • Microsoft warns of Java VM flaws - Microsoft late Wednesday issued a "critical" security alert for a series of Java Virtual Machine bugs, one of which could allow a hacker to steal information or reformat the hard drives of compromised computers.
  • Denmark Bills Users for Downloads - Earlier this year, AntiPiratGruppen (Anti-Piracy Group) began tracking the activities of Danish users of file-sharing networks, and then contacting the appropriate Internet service providers demanding users' names and addresses. Approximately 150 people received invoices averaging $400, said Morten Wind Lindegaard, an attorney with AntiPiratGruppen, with some users receiving bills for more than $10,000 for their alleged infringement.
  • RIAA Raids Alleged Music Pirates - The Recording Industry Association of America and the U.S. Secret Service raided an alleged music piracy operation in New York on Monday, seizing what they say is the largest quantity of recording equipment used for music piracy in the United States to date, according to a statement released Wednesday. The RIAA worked in conjunction with the Secret Service on a two-month investigation before charging into the operation located in Queens, New York, the RIAA said in the statement. Three suspects were arrested; and 35,000 recordable CDs, 10,000 DVDs, and hundreds of CD copying devices were confiscated.
  • Ancient computer still ticking - A half-century old computer, called CSIRAC, is still operating in Australia. The computer, which was Australia's first, ran at a blistering 300 kilohertz, had 2 KB RAM, and 2.5 KB storage. It operated from 1951 until 1964, and currently resides in the Melbourne museum. CSIRAC may have been the first computer to actually play music. Although modern readers may scoff at the seemingly underpowered machine, the 7000 kilogram, 20 kilowatt computer was used to perform a variety of useful tasks.
  • TiVo System to Offer Home Music, PC Pictures - TiVo Inc. said on Thursday its television recording system will soon be able to play digital music and show pictures stored in personal computers. Data stored in file formats such as MP3 and JPEG will appear on the television that is connected to the TiVo set-top box, company Chief Executive Michael Ramsey told investors at a Credit Suisse First Boston Conference. The company will likely charge an additional fee for the premium service, which will be launched in January at the Consumer Electronics Association's CES conference in Las Vegas, he said.

  • THG's 2002 Holiday Buyers' Guide - The Second Edition - Well, the holiday buying rush is now in full swing. Many of us are already debt-laden from our first rounds of holiday shopping. In this second edition, we review some new products and technology that we wouldn't normally review at THG. We even threw in a few software suggestions based on some of our recent playing experiences.
  • Bravo AutoPrinter - automated disc printing - Primera Technology announces its new Bravo AutoPrinter ($1495 MSRP). Based upon the same robotic mechanism used in Primera's popular Bravo Disc Publisher, the Bravo AutoPrinter automates the process of transporting discs into and out of Bravo's integrated printer.
  • TEAC announces their first DVD-RW writer - The TEAC DV-W50E (PR)burns DVD-Rs at 4x speed and DVD-RWs at 2x speed. CD-Rs are burnt at 16x speed, CD-RWs at 8x speed. In addition to current CD and CD-R/RW formats, the recorder supports DVD-ROM and DVD-Video (single + dual layer) as well as DVD-R and DVD-RW. According to the producers, transfer rates of up to 5.54 MB/s are reached in the DVD-R mode, 2.77 MB/s in DVD-RW mode, 2.4 MB/s in CD-R and 1.2 MB/s in the CD-RW mode. Access times are 140 ms in the DVD-ROM mode and 130 ms with CD-ROMs.
  • Creative chooses ATI for Blaster 5 - It seems that Creative has ditched its affiliation with NVIDIA and has chosen to market its Creative Blaster 5 series of cards under the ATI flag. On offer are RX9700 Pro, RX9000 Pro & RX9000 64MB cards with the RX9000 Pro DDR memory clocked at 550MHz. This is surely a blow to NVIDIA who hoped to steal the ATI (mostly short lived) crown with its new GeForceFX cards. ATI appear to be making leaps and bounds in as far as consumer confidence goes with its new unified drivers improving with every release NVIDIA certainly have their work cut out for them.
  • ATI RADEON 9700 PRO Extreme Overclocking Experience - The goal of our today's experiment is to overclock ATI RADEON 9700 PRO to its maximum. Ideally, we would like to get as much as a 30% performance growth. If we get it, there will be a graphics card (although only one in the world, but now and here) that would be able to "kill" NVIDIA GeForceFX.
  • On the GeForce FX Core and Memory Clock-Speeds - According to our colleagues, NVIDIA GeForce FX 5800-based products will be clocked at 400/900MHz for core/memory, not so much lower compared to the GeForce FX 5800 Ultra powered products with 500/1000MHz speeds respectively.

  • Opera 6 for Mac OS 8.6-10.2 - Opera Software ASA today released the final version of Opera 6 for Mac OS 8.6-10.2.2 (download), offering Mac users a faster and better Internet experience. This is the first final Opera released for Mac OS X, and today's released version runs on Mac OS 8.6-10.2.2.
  • PHP 4.3.0RC3 out - PHP 4.3.0RC3 (win32) is out. This will be the last release candidate before the final release. From this point on, only crash and showstopper bugs will be fixed.

Sony is going to leave those 707, 717 owners so screwed: you got yourself a $1000 digital camera with Carl Zwiss lens and 5 megapixel of CCD, and you still stuck with 128M of Memory stick, only able to take about 20 or so pictures, you careful pick your subject and review them and delete the bad ones. Another guy walks by with his G3 and blasting away in burst mode recording RAW images, no fear he already got a Microdrive. SONY IS SO FUKED UP.

ritz chill out dude i own a Sony TRV16 and even though it doesnt come with a Memory card facility i dont CARE ! WTF r u gonna do with 1gb of space 4 pics ! only ppl jumping up 4 joy r those porn photographers ! As 4 me i'll stick with SONY the best in digital camcorder TECH !

Lard, you are right. And actually I was a bit too generalized, I shoulda say "Sony's 707/717 Digital Camera Owners are so fuked up". I have no issues with other Sony's electronics. And um you do need 1G of memory when you bring the camera with you such vacation, important events(I took over 500M of stuff on one graduation), and after you tried taking pictures with 128M of memory on the 707/717 digital camera, you probably get my idea.
