  • MS bug exposes millions to attack -  The vulnerability, found by security company Foundstone and confirmed by Microsoft, could allow an Internet attacker to take over a Web server, spread an e-mail virus or create a fast-spreading network worm.  The flaw affects IIS Web servers using the Microsoft Data Access Component (MDAC) to talk to a database. Servers running the latest software, MDAC 2.7, are free from the security hole, as are servers on which an administrator has run the IIS Lockdown Tool, an application that helps secure systems. Windows computers, except those running Windows XP, are also vulnerable if Internet Explorer 5.01, 5.5 and 6 are present, as they also use the data access component. However, attacks on such systems are harder to accomplish, Terwoerds said. Microsoft has posted information (patch for win9x/ME/2k/NT) about the flaw and how to secure Windows PCs and Web servers in an advisory on its TechNet site.

  • Jumping from satellite to cellular and back - London-based Inmarsat's Regional BGAN service, announced Tuesday, is the second to merge satellite and cellular phone networks. Globalstar Telecommunications has been selling hybrid cellular-satellite phones and services for some time. But Inmarsat's service can deliver data at 176kbps, about twice as fast as Globalstar's, according to both companies. Unlike Globalstar's service, however, Inmarsat's modem-based Regional BGAN is limited to data-specific tasks such as Web surfing and getting behind a corporate firewall; it does not handle voice calls.
  • Merger could warp universe - Two black holes drifting towards each other will merge in millions of years with a burst of gravitational waves that could warp the very fabric of space. Scientists said yesterday the Chandra X-ray Observatory has found the first evidence that two immense black holes can co-exist in the same galaxy and that they are moving towards each other for an eventual merger.  The double black holes were found in a bright, highly active galaxy known as NGC6240, about 400 million light years from the Earth.
