- Security Alert: US Admiral Proposes "Big Brother" System -
According to the
New York
Times and the
Washington Post, retired Vice Admiral John Poindexter has proposed the
creation of a tracking and monitoring system called "Total
Information Awareness". This system
would gather information about individuals from widely varied sources,
including telephone calling records, credit card charges, banking
transactions, airline reservations, and biometric databases -- all without
search warrants or prior notice. Poindexter is promoting the massive data
mining system as a weapon against terrorism, and has been quoted as saying
that it is necessary to "break down the stovepipes" between commercial and
government databases so as to facilitate the hunt for terrorist activity.
- Jowood in troubles? - An investor update on the
JoWooD
Official Website: "JoWood has already introduced extensive
restructuring measures so as to be able to concentrate on its core competences

additional expenses of at least EUR 20 million. For the time being, we have
therefore delayed publication of our quarterly figures and a detailed outlook
for the fourth quarter and the year 2002 as a whole. However, on the strength
of orders already received, we anticipate a considerable increase in sales for
the fourth quarter. We have already commenced talks with our bankers with a

- Look! Up in the Sky! It's a Flying Cell Phone Tower! - Helios, in
fact, is the centerpiece of a next-generation startup called SkyTower
Telecommunications, an AeroVironment spinoff that plans to launch Helios and
many of its clones to an altitude of 12 miles -- only weather balloons and U-2
spy planes venture that high in the atmosphere -- where they would serve as
private communications satellites for consumers and businesses on the
ground...Helios
will bathe the ground directly below it in an electromagnetic mélange of
bargain-priced broadband Internet, third-generation (3G) mobile-phone service,

- 87gigabytes DVD soon? - Boston College researchers have found a way
to store about 19 times more data on a disk than a common DVD can hold, using
optical media made with common products, the December issue of Nature
Materials reports. An epoxy glue sold at hardware stores and a
glass-like substance were formed into a
DVD-size disk able to hold about 87 gigabytes, equal to 87,000 paperback
books. A typical DVD holds about 4.7 gigabytes. The discovery is unique
because the materials remained stable, keeping data intact, the project's
leader said.
- Epox offers KT400, Thoroughbred unlocked - Epox recently announced
a BIOS for
its KT400 boards, branded as the 8K9A, that offers a feature for those
wanting to overclocking Athlons without changing the processor itself. This
makes it an easier task to overclock AMD chips, given that there's always a
danger of losing the warranty on the microprocessor if you dabble too much.
Epox has made it possible to have processors that are multiplier unlocked on
AMD retail Athlons. This means you will be able to overclock your CPU just by
plugging in it into the board, and then overclocking at will, because of the
voltage and other settings Epox includes. The BIOS works for all Thoroughbred
processors -- including revision B -- that support FSB 333. All processors
from 2200+ up to the still unavailable 2800+ are supported.
