  • "Rapunzel" CD-ROM Lets Barbie Free Her Prince - There's a crisis in Barbie Land: The world's most famous doll, starring in the fairy-tale role of Rapunzel, has lost handsome Prince Stefan.  He's been kidnapped and turned to stone by the evil witch Gothel. If that wasn't bad enough, is almost time for the masquerade ball! So how does Barbie respond to this devastating tragedy?  She redecorates, of course! The weird thing about Barbie's interior design strategy is that it actually makes sense when playing the "Barbie as Rapunzel" game ($30, Windows/Macintosh). [do you like Barbie? :P  ~ hx hides ...] :))
  • Silicon Valley's Jobless Rate 7.9 Percent - The technology downturn continues to hammer California's Silicon Valley, where the unemployment rate in October was 7.9 percent, the highest level since 1983 and well above last month's statewide average of 6.4 percent.
  • Sun's rays to roast Earth as poles flip - Earth's magnetic field - the force that protects us from deadly radiation bursts from outer space - is weakening dramatically. Scientists have discovered that its strength has dropped precipitously over the past two centuries and could disappear over the next 1,000 years.  The effects could be catastrophic. Powerful radiation bursts, which normally never touch the atmosphere, would heat up its upper layers, triggering climatic disruption. Navigation and communication satellites, Earth's eyes and ears, would be destroyed and migrating animals left unable to navigate.
  • Stargate SG1 Season 7 Confirmed - It's official! Stargate SG-1 will go on another year, according to an announcement made today by The Sci-Fi Channel. The cable network will hold on to the long-running science fiction series -- it's highest-rated original show -- for a seventh season. The last half of Season Six starts January 10 on Sci-Fi, with the season finale expected to air in March. Season Seven should begin airing in June.
  • AMD Athlon XP Processors 2600+ and 2700+ With 333MHz FSB For Sale in Japan - According to this translation at Xbit-labs, AMD Athlon XP processors with 2600+ and 2700+ model numbers appeared in Japanese retail. Both CPUs are intended for 333MHz system bus and run at 2083 and 2166MHz respectively. It worth to mention that there are very few 2600+ chips with 266MHz FSB support all around the world at this time, hence, it may eventually appear that AMD will offer its products with this model number only for the 333MHz system bus. The Athlon XP 2700+ processor is priced at Y50800 ($420), while its lower speed brethren costs Y42800 ($354). It seems that the novelties are a bit overpriced, since officially AMD sells such devices for $349 and $297 respectively in quantities starting from 1000 pieces.
