  • Xbox instead Beer? :) - Under the deal, Budweiser brewer Anheuser-Busch will help the software giant rotate 300 Xbox demo units through thousands of bars in the United States between now and the end of the year. Patrons will be invited to play Xbox games and to register to win promotional items from both companies. While some analysts have said Microsoft needs to focus on younger consumers to reach a mass-market audience, the new promotion is another indication the company intends to continue courting older, hardcore gamers.
  • Nextel bets on cutting-edge phone - On Monday, the wireless carrier announced its Nextel i90c Swiss Army Special Edition, a Motorola-built phone that Nextel has co-branded with Victorinox, the famous maker of Swiss Army knives. Victorinox helped design the $250 phone, which sports a translucent red plastic shell and a red screen backlight and comes loaded with text versions of "The Worst Case Scenario Survival Handbook" and a first aid manual, among other features. Buyers of the i90c even get a corkscrew and a plastic toothpick--though those aren't part of the phone itself; they come tucked inside a matching Victorinox knife that's part of the package.
  • Army researchers eye nanomachine-based 'smart' paints for combat vehicles - U.S. Army experts are trying to embed microscopic electromechanical machines in paint that could detect and heal cracks and corrosion in the bodies of combat vehicles, as well as give vehicles the chameleon-like quality of rapidly altering camouflage to blend in with changing operating environments. Officials of the Army Tank-automotive and Armaments Command's Armament Research, Development and Engineering Center (TACOM-ARDEC) at Picatinny Arsenal, N.J., are working with scientists at the New Jersey Institute of Technology in Newark, N.J., to develop nanotechnology-based "smart" coatings for Army vehicles and other materiel.
  • TFT volumes to pass CRT in 2004 - Samsung Electronics is hoping to consolidate its position in the LCD market with the opening of a factory in China. The Korean electronics giant has begun work on a 100,000 sq meter TFT-LCD factor in Suzhou in Jiangsu province, China, which will produce around 160,000 modules a month, when it opens in the second half of next year.
  • Reuters hacks accused of hacking - Reuters stands accused of hacking today amid accusations that it broke into the computer systems of Swedish IT group Intentia to publish its results ahead of their official release. Intentia said it would file criminal charges today after its internal investigation of how its disappointing third quarter figures came to be obtained before their scheduled release pointed the finger of blame at Reuters. Intentia told the FT that an internal investigation revealed evidence of an "unauthorised entry" into its IT systems "via an IP address belonging to Reuters".
