- Photo with Trojan -
Kaspersky Labs reports
the detection of a Trojan horse, FireAnvil, embedded in a commercial product
from US company, Firehand Technologies Corporation."Firehand Ember Millennium"
is a software program for viewing and editing graphic files and is sold via
Internet on the site www.firehand.com. Trojan subprograms have been detected
in two files of the product: Ember32.exe - the main file of the product
fireutil.dll -library.
- AMD floods the transistor gates - Like Intel and IBM, AMD says it's
has developed
a new
multiple-gate transistor, which will create more-powerful,
energy-efficient processors.
- Maxtor Announces 320GB HDD - I already mentioned this new HDD, but
yesterday I missed the press release... :) Maxtor announced
Maxtor MaXLine, its newest generation of ATA drives designed specifically
for rapidly emerging enterprise storage applications including near-line,
media storage and network storage. The MaXLine family features two critical
differentiators: huge capacities up to 320 GB for corporate archiving and

- Java flaws burn Internet Explorer - Security experts have
issued warnings
about vulnerabilities in the Java Virtual Machine (JVM) contained in the
latest versions of Internet Explorer (IE). The flaws allow an attacker to
deliver and execute arbitrary code on a victim's system when a hostile website
or message is viewed in either IE or Outlook. Finnish security firm Online
Solutions claims that it has found 10 different vulnerabilities in the JVM
which it has reported to Microsoft.
- Lighting Up Fetal Brain Activity - A device called SARA
can detect and record fetal brain activity. That is a milestone for
pediatrics, but the machine's most valuable feature lies in its potential to
help reduce the number of children born with brain damage. SARA, which stands
for SQUID Array for Reproductive Assessment (SQUID, in turn, is shorthand for
Superconducting Quantum Interference Device), uses a superconductor and
pick-up coils cooled by liquid helium to detect tiny fluctuations in magnetic
fields.

- DirectX 9.1 to appear in Spring 2003 -
DirectX 9.1
will not bring the new shaders that should be implemented in hardware that
will be launched at the end of next year. Just to remind you, Microsoft
decided at the last minute to accept Pixel Shader 1.1 as a standard for
DirectX 8. This was a win for Nvidia since ATI's Radeon, later called Radeon
7200, had support for pixel shader 1.0 but not for 1.1. ATI did a similar
thing as Nvidia with DirectX 8.1, when it introduced Pixel shader 1.4 with
more instructions and improvements meaning the Nvidia Geforce 3 card supported
just DirectX 8.0 but not DirectX 8.1.
This time DirectX 9 hardware will have full support for all DirectX 9.1
feature. To clarify things for you, Radeon 9700 Pro and NV30 when it comes out
will be DirectX 9.1 hardware. You won't see any new pixel shader supported in
hardware than version 2.0, which is used by Radeon 9700 PRO.
- Radeon 9700 vmod - This mod pushes your Radeon 9700 to
