- Apher worm: From Russia with problems - Why would Microsoft send
you an announcement of a new antivirus product from Russia? It wouldn't. But
the author of the
Apher
worm is hoping some people will bite.
- Interactive sperm helps fight cancer - An interactive sperm called
Sammy is
the star of an online game designed to carry a message about prostate
cancer. A spokesperson for the charity said that
Sammy is a health
education game designed to introduce men to the prostate gland and the
role it plays in sex.
- CD Copy Stopper - Software pirates beware:
CD-ROMs might soon be armed with invisible security systems that keep
their contents-games and business applications-under lock and key. The
OpSecure CD was developed by Rosh-Ha-ayin, Israel-based Doc-Witness. A "smart
card" embedded in the CD unlocks the disc's encrypted content. You can copy
the CD, but without the card the software won't run. Try to install the
software on more computers than the publisher allows and the smart card will
shut you down. The technology works by turning an ordinary CD drive into a
smart-card reader. A photodetector at the edge of the CD turns the drive's
laser light into electrical pulses, which travel to the embedded smart card
and request the key. If the card deems the request legitimate, it returns the
key as an electronic signal that an onboard light-emitting diode converts into
light and beams back to the drive.
- Xbox Live applicants: No game for you - More than 100,000 Xbox
owners
applied to participate in the beta program for Xbox Live, said Jennifer
Booth, marketing director for Xbox Live. A total of 5,000 applicants were
notified Tuesday that they had been selected for the first round of beta
testing and will be able to tap into online versions of "NFL Fever" and racing
game "Re-Volt" starting Friday.
