  • T-Mobile picks up Pocket PC device - T-Mobile's Pocket PC Phone Edition combines cell phone and organizer features as well as voice and data capabilities, which will let customers wirelessly surf the Web and send and receive e-mail. The device will cost $550, but T-Mobile is offering a $50 rebate on the device for the next 45 days for subscribers who agree to a one-year service contract. The device runs on T-Mobile's GSM (global system for mobile communications) and GPRS (general packet radio service) wireless networks.
  • U.S. Tests Robots in Afghanistan - Hermes the robot edged its way into the dark cave, its treads spinning over the dust and small rocks until a boulder appeared in its path. No problem. The tiny machine dropped its side arms, lifted onto and over the boulder, and rolled on, its two cameras sending images to an operator waiting outside.

  • IBM Unveils N.Y. Chip-Making Plant - IBM Corp. unveiled what was believed to be the world's most advanced chip-making plant Wednesday, promising 1,000 new jobs and a boost to the upstate economy. The $2.5 billion, 140,000-square-foot facility currently makes the prototype cutting-edge chips and was expected to reach full production by February 2. The plant also will be the first to mass produce circuits thinner than 0.1 micron, or 1,000 times thinner than a human hair. The old standard was 0.25 microns, with some chips now at 0.18 microns.
  • DivX for the Zaurus - theKompany has released yet another application for the GNU/Linux-based Sharp Zaurus SL-5500, this time a DivX video player named tkcVideo. The program supports video files encoded using MPEG 1, MPEG 2, MPEG 4 (DivX), MJPEG, or AVI files, and accompanying audio streams in mp1, mp2, and mp3 format.
