- Royalty fees killing most Internet radio stations - More than 200
Internet-based radio stations have shut down because of a royalty fee that takes
effect in September, and more are closing daily.Most of the estimated 10,000 radio
Webcasters are expected to follow suit, "with the exception of Yahoo, AOL, Microsoft
and other deep-pocketed conglomerates who can afford a loss leader," says Kurt
Hanson, editor of the Radio and Internet Newsletter.
- Hollywood hacking bill hits House - A bill introduced in the House of
Representatives would dramatically rewrite federal law to permit
copyright owners to legally hack into peer-to-peer networks.
- AMD fielding 64 bits for PCs - As Intel accelerates the launch
date of its 3GHz Pentium 4 chip, arch rival AMD continues to build the foundation for
"ClawHammer." The 64-bit Athlon processor is expected to come out early next year,
giving desktop PCs a performance similar to that of workstations used in research labs at
DaimlerChrysler or NASA.
- WindowsXP SP1 Rumours Are False - A bizarre rumor about Microsoft
making sweeping changing to its Product Activation technology in Windows XP Service Pack 1
(SP1) is completely untrue. The rumor, which was started by a small
technology enthusiast Web site, had Microsoft changing the product keys for all of its
customers using volume licensing. These rumors have since spread across the Internet and
been embellished in various ways, including a version I came across Thursday morning
claiming that Microsoft was making the change so it could charge licensees yet again for
SP1. Not so, says Microsoft.
- Microsoft plans to get rid of Windows 98/NT4 - On July 1st 2002

NT.
