- MS details new Win XP edition - With Windows Media
Center, Microsoft fulfills its long-standing wish to let consumers make their PC part
of a home entertainment system. But it won't be compatible with older systems.
- New OpenGL graphics standard released - The biggest multi-platform
graphics standard
gets an upgrade, adding technology to exploit the latest graphics hardware. And Nokia
says it will bring OpenGL 1.4 to mobile phones.
- Universal appoints head of anti-piracy - Universal Music Group creates a new
full-time position to help it combat piracy, beefing up efforts to hobble unauthorized
file-swapping.
- Hackers face life imprisonment - The US House of Representatives
yesterday approved a bill
that could put hackers in the slammer for life.
Yesterday's vote, carried by an overwhelming 385 to three, indicated that the Cyber
Security Enhancement Act, written up before the crackdown on terrorism began last
September, will be rubber stamped all the way. The bill must go before the Senate to
become law, but it is expected to meet with little, if any, opposition. However, as the
holiday period for senators includes all of August, the legislation may not be passed
until October.

- AT&T Wireless Offers Digital Mobile Phone Camera - AT&T
Wireless Services introduced a digital picture service on Tuesday that will allow
customers to use their mobile phone to take pictures and instantly send them to any e-mail
address.
- Samsung introduces 1GHZ DRAM for graphics - Samsung has introduced a
128-Mbit synchronous DRAM intended for graphics and networking applications based on
the double data rate (DDR II) interface. The chip is capable of a data transmission
frequency of 1-GHz and a data transmission rate of 32-Gbits per second, according to the
company. Mass production of the 128-Mbit 1GHz DRAM is due to start some time before the
end of September 2002.

What? Privacy. It's amazing how willing we are to forget about that in the name of convienance. Especially the Japanese and Americans.
Call me old-fashioned but screw that idea. Every system created has been compromised in some fashion. This is no different.
