  • Microsoft's Freon project is an Xbox, with extras - What   Freon stands for is a souped-up successor to the Xbox console — capable of playing games but also offering television capabilities, such as pausing live TV and recording shows onto a computer hard drive, say people familiar with the effort. Such a device, which could cost around $500, would have another big advantage: It could beat video-game market leader Sony Corp. to the punch.
  • Start-up spins MP3s for Game Boy - Santa Monica, Calif.-based SongPro plans to launch a device that will sell for less than $99 this fall that will play digital music in various formats on any of the tens of millions of Game Boy game consoles worldwide.
  • Can a chip help computers see in 3D? - A Silicon Valley start-up believes it can give stereo vision to video cameras by encoding a processing scheme into a custom-designed chip. Ready for a robot with depth perception?
  • Xbox mod-chips still on the menu - Last week we reported on Xbox mod-chip group Enigmah's decision to withdraw its product from the market, citing a consultation with lawyers as its reason for pulling back from the legally delicate area of console modification.  However, it transpires that Enigmah hasn't cancelled its mod-chip plans after all, and the team has merely renamed to "X-ecuter" in order to launch a new chip. This is significantly easier to fit than previous efforts - so easy, in fact, that anyone with a basic knowledge of soldering could do it (unlike previous Xbox chips or the PS2 Messiah chip, which required precision micro-soldering equipment to fit).
  • Intel moves 2.80GHz Pentium 4 into 2002/Q3 - The most recent Intel roadmaps show that the firm is continuing to scale its Pentium 4 chip, with a 2.80GHz processor now slated for this quarter, quarter three.  Intel ascribes the shift to a "healthy" 130 nanometer process and good engineering. That means it's now highly likely that Intel will be able to introduce a 3GHz Pentium 4 for the fourth quarter, as the chip dates shuffle forward.  The 2.80GHz Pentium 4 will kick off at $637, with the 2.66GHz/2.6GHz processor costing $562, and the 2.53GHz/2.5GHz processors dropping to $433, when bought in quantities of 1,000.
  • MSI GeForce 4 Ti 4600 Review - The G4Ti4600-VTD comes with a good line up of games, exceptional software, good performance, and solid overclockability to keep the gamer worried less about frame-rates and more about fragging. MSI did not only market the G4Ti4600-VTD at the hardcore gamer, it also had the media enthusiast in mind with its release. The card comes packed with all the connections and software one would need to start manipulating video.
  • Menuet - Free OS - Menuet is a fully 32 bit assembly written, graphical OS for asm programming, distributed under General Public License. Since Menuet fits to a single floppy, you only need one blank 1.44 M diskette. Your hard disks are not affected in any way. Assembly programmers unite
  • ASPI Fix For Windows 2000/XP - I've done a small guide for how to fix ASPI under NT/2K/XP because installing the latest Adaptec ASPI doesn't create some of the necessary keys that many programs, such as AudioCatalyst, CDRWIN, Exact Audio Copy and others need before they can actually discover your drives. This is a problem that has been annoying the hell out of a lot of friends of mine, so I thought there must be many others out there grieving over lack of AudioCatalyst functionality if nothing else.
  • New IE spy progie exploits DCOM - A group of Japanese security enthusiasts has developed a little tool called IE'en which exposes traffic between an IE user and any server he's contacting, including logins and passwords over HTTPS.
  • CDex 1.50 beta 5 - CDex is a freeware application, which is able to extract audio tracks from a CD-ROM digitally, and save those files to disk as either regular WAV file or MP3 files. CDex reads the digital audio data directly from the disc, which can be stored in either a WAV file or a MPEG (MP2 or MP3) sound file.
  • FreeRAM XP Pro 1.11 - FreeRAM XP Pro is a freeware application designed to defragment and free up your system's RAM.
  • RefreshForce v1.0 -This is a complete generic fix to the Windows 2000/XP refresh problem and doesn't need to run in the background. It does NOT depend on specific graphics card and drivers, and it does not require usage of the Plug & Play monitor drivers to get over 85Hz.
  • ICQ 2002A Build 3728 - Mirabilis today released the latest version of their instant messenger software ICQ.
  • ICQ Lite Alpha Build #1019 - ICQ Lite is pure messaging: It includes only the most popular features of ICQ, such as instant messaging, file transfer, SMS and meeting people, for super-quick communication. It is a small download of 1.4 Mb, installation is quick and easy and it takes minimal memory to run. Because it's so small and has everything good about the full-featured ICQ made easy, it's the perfect version to send to your friends and get them on ICQ. It is a new experimental version of the ICQ software and is still under development, may be unstable and is likely to contain bugs. Contains no advertising. (This is not the ICQ Web-based client that has been renamed to ICQ2Go!).
