  • Warnings On Radioactive Security - Radioactive materials that a terrorist would need to build a "dirty bomb" are available around the world, and more than 100 countries may have inadequate programs to prevent or even detect thefts, a U.N. agency said Tuesday.
  • MS unveils new Office plans - At TechXNY, Microsoft takes the wraps off Office 11--it's set to replace Office XP in 2003. Plus, the word is that Tablet PCs will debut in November.
  • Cyberraid to hit U.S. agencies - Nearly half of IT professionals believe that the U.S. government will be hit with a "major cyberattack" in the next 12 months, according to the survey, conducted for the Business Software Alliance.
  • Developers issue OpenSSH alert - Open source developers yesterday warned of a significant vulnerability in OpenSSH, a tool that ships with many Linux and Unix flavours. The details of the hole have not been made public because a patch is not yet available, but the secrecy of the developers has caused a schism in the open source community.
  • Buggy software costs users, vendors nearly $60B annually - Software bugs are costing the U.S. economy an estimated $59.5 billion each year, with more than half of the cost borne by end users and the remainder by developers and vendors, according to a new federal study. Improvements in testing could reduce this cost by about a third, or $22.5 billion, but it won't eliminate all software errors, the study said. Of the total $59.5 billion cost, users incurred 64% of the cost and developers 36%.
  • Windows Longhorn slips again, becomes megaproject - Gates's list of what's planned for Longhorn is largely user's eye view, classic eye-candy of the sort that gets bolted on to the company's interim releases, but given that we're currently talking about a major overhaul, these ought to be more integral to the finished product than has often been the case in the past. Gates alludes to the database angle by asking of current operating systems: "Why are my document files stored one way, my contacts another way, and my e-mail and instant-messaging buddy list still another, and why aren't they related to my calendar or to one another and easy to search en masse?"

  • Abit Siluro GeForce4 Ti4200 Review - Tweakers Australia has posted a review of the ABIT Siluro GeForce4 Ti4200.
  • MX 460 @ 600MHz - This card should be the fastest MX 460 on the market that will use 600MHz memory and Gainward is promising that on 10x7 at 32-bit colour, triple buffered, with two sample FSAA on -- or, simply, quite a heavy load for a mainstream card -- we should be at last see some performance difference between this and the previous MX 460 generation.
  • Abit BD7II RAID Motherboard Review  - Abit has once again produced a strong board which blends performance with lots of overclocking features. The BD7II is a solid board if you're into overclocking and achieving maximal performance from your setup. While the board has a lot of good points, it does have a few negative points.
  • Patched UXTheme.DLL (WinXP SP 1 beta) - XTechNet.net has posted a patched version of UXTheme.dll, which works on builds of Windows XP SP1 and beyond has been created. Previously these did not work, giving the error "Incorrect Version of Windows." Now it may install and will work well. Although the patched DLL has not been released yet, it is being tested and will be distributed shortly...
