  • World Cup virus kicks off - Masquerading as an application for viewing match results, WorldCup spreads via email and the popular IRC application. The virus appears to be a simple rewrite of the Chick virus, which claimed to be a collection of Britney Spears pictures. The virus cannot do any damage automatically, as a user has first to open the infected file.
  • Shakira worm rocks Outlook users - There's nothing new about the latest Internet worm, Shakira (vbs.vbswg-aq@mm). An e-mail message allegedly containing photos of the Grammy-winning Colombian rock star will instead launch a flood of infected copies on other users of Microsoft Outlook or IRC.
  • FBI wants to track your Web trail - Now the FBI is hoping to capture and corral more of our digital detritus in the name of fighting terrorism. The Senate Judiciary Committee on Thursday will examine proposed Justice Department guidelines that would give federal investigators new license to mine publicly available databases and monitor Web use. The changes, which come after a major FBI shakeup last week, have sparked intense debate over the merits of expanding government surveillance powers as the country faces ongoing threats of terrorist attacks.
  • 'Disturbing' Xbox ads banned in the U.K. - Regulators in the United Kingdom have given the thumbs-down to a Microsoft advertisement for the Xbox console that has offended some viewers. The Independent Television Commission has slammed the ad as "shocking" and banned the commercial from U.K. television.  The ad begins with a newborn child flying through a window before aging decades in seconds--then crashing and screaming into a grave as an elderly man. • Windows XP Service Pack Beta Leaked - This beta release of the Windows XP SP1 includes Windows Messenger 4.7 (build 31), Internet Explorer 6.0 SP1 (build 2800.1050), a slightly updated version of Windows Media Player 8.0 (build 4483), full support for USB 2.0 and IPv6. Despite these goodies, some people may find the Service Pack 1 to include a rather unpleasant surprise: Microsoft has blacklisted one of the famous Volume License Keys out there in order to prevent pirated copies of Windows XP from updating. This beta will only work on english language systems and users of that popular corporate CD key will find that the patch will not install. This is beta software and I only recommend that you install it, if you know what you are doing. (mirror1, mirror2, mirror3)
