  • Microsoft Exchange hole "critical" - The vulnerability, which Microsoft classified as "critical," affects e-mail servers running Exchange 2000. Malformed messages created using RFC 821 and 822, versions of the SMTP format commonly used by e-mail programs, can cause the CPU of the server receiving the message to run at 100 percent as it attempts to read the message. The result would be a denial-of-service attack, with the affected server unable to do anything until it finishes processing the message.
  • Intel Itanium 2 Benchmarks - Intel has released some benchmarks today for their upcoming Itanium 2 processor codenamed McKinley that is on schedule to be launched during second half of this year. With a faster 3MB on-die L3 cache, 6 instructions/cycle and 6.4GB/s of bandwidth, it is poised to perform at 1.5-2x of the current Itanium processor. Here's the overview of how the Intel Itanium 2 at 1Ghz clock frequency will perform against the current Itanium 800Mhz processor.
  • Intel 850E & Pentium 4 2.4GHz - Well earlier this month Intel announced and launched the third iteration of their P4, still known as Northwood, but featuring a new 533MHz quad pumped 133MHz data bus to bestow a whopping 4.2GB/s of data bandwidth. Along with this, Intel presented the 850E chipset with official support for the P4's new 533MHz data bus, being the only distinction from the former 850 chipset. 133MHz PC1066 RDRAM support failed to make it's way into the 850E, although many new boards based on the 850E do feature the necessary clock dividers/multipliers, and wont have a problem running this type of memory - even if the standard is classified as 'unofficial'.
  • There's no ignoring Doom III - This good article at MSNBC.com is from yesterday, but still worth reading. Carmack said about ATI: "I told everyone that I was going to demonstrate Doom III on the best hardware, and there has been no collusion or kickbacks or anything like that going on. Our objective is the technical merit."
