  • RDRAM vs. DDR SDRAM - Intel is moving its Pentium 4 platform to new 533MHz Quad Pumped Bus in two steps. The first step, which was undertaken on May 6, was the actual introduction of the processors intended to work with this bus and one chipset supporting them, i850E. Although, i850E supported only dual-channel RDRAM, which implied that those of you who were willing to build a high-performance system on Intel Pentium 4 processor with 533MHz bus were doomed to using RDRAM only. AT the same time Intel made a strategic decision: they will little by little give up using Rambus memory in their Pentium 4 systems in favour of more promising DDR SDRAM. And it means that i850E can never become a basic platform for Pentium 4 CPUs with 533MHz bus.
