  • DVD-cracking code ban upheld - Hacker magazine 2600 has lost its bid for an appeal of a ruling banning it from posting code that can be used to crack DVD copy protections.
  • DrinkOrDie Leader Gets Four Years - The ringleader of a software piracy group known as DrinkOrDie today was sentenced to nearly four years in prison for his role in a "warez" operation that caused millions of dollars in damages, federal prosecutors said.  In U.S. District Court in Alexandria, Va., John Sankus, Jr., 28, of Philadelphia, was handed a 46-month sentence on a single felony count of conspiracy to commit criminal copyright infringement.
  • Ford warns of identity fraud  - Ford Motor's credit arm notifies 13,000 people that their credit reports, full of information that could be used for identity theft or fraud, were illegally downloaded.
  • Motorola to Offer Classic Games Like Pong on Phones - Chicago area-based Motorola said it has signed a global distribution deal with Manchester, England-based iFone to add such classic Atari games as Pong, Centipede and Asteroids to its cell phones.
  • MS IE patch misses the mark - Microsoft's latest cumulative patch for Internet Explorer fails to tackle at least one of the problems it is meant to fix, and leaves a dozen reported security bugs unpatched. Heh as usually, I don't think it's a surprise :)
  • Artifact Entertainment First to Offer Wireless - Artifact Entertainment and Froghop intend to work together to make Horizons the first Massively Multiplayer Online Game  to combine online and wireless capabilities, bringing community interaction to new heights.
  • Spammers could face fines - A bill aimed at limiting unwanted junk e-mail was approved and sent to the floor by the Senate Commerce Committee on Friday with unanimous support from Democrats and Republicans. It would strengthen the Federal Trade Commission's enforcement authority by allowing it to impose fines of up to $10 each on e-mails that violate existing laws against spam, with a cap of $500,000. 
  • AMD To Launch Desktop Thoroughbred in June - Advanced Micro Devices will launch the desktop version of its Thoroughbred Athlon XP microprocessor on June 10, according to an email from the company forwarded by an anonymous source.
  • New Intel chipsets, Celerons cut PC prices - PC makers will launch a slew of new desktop PCs next week that will pair Intel's newest 1.7GHz Celeron chip, announced Wednesday, with two new versions of its 845 chipset, dubbed the 845G and the 845GL, that include built-in graphics and Universal Serial Bus 2.0, a high-speed connection for digital cameras and other devices. The combination of the chip and chipset will allow manufacturers to deliver new, low-priced PCs that offer greater performance than current Celeron PCs, but will start at $650, about the same as current Celeron desktops or the cheapest Pentium 4s. They also offer greater functionality: USB 2.0 supports faster data transfer, speeding up file transfer for tasks such as downloading pictures from a digital camera.
  • VIA announces P4PB, world's first motherboard featuring VIA Apollo P4X333 chipset - VIA Technologies announced its new Pentium 4-supporting P4PB motherboard. The board comes equipped with the company's Apollo P4X333 chipset and supports a 533/400MHz FSB (front-side bus) as well as 2700MB/s DDR333 SDRAM with ECC.
    Other features include RAID ATA/133 0,1, USB 2.0 and onboard six-channel surround sound audio. The ATX form factor board also supports three DDR333/266 DIMMs and provides expansion though five PCI, one AGP and one CNR slot. Smart Card and Memory Stick support is also available.
