- Korean firm offers $100,000 in hacking competition - A Korean
company is offering $100,000 (£70,000) in a 48-hour hacking competition, to be
run this week. The first hacker to gain access to a server run by Korea Digital Works and leave their
name on the site's front page this week will find it an enriching experience .Korea
Digital Works (KDWorks) will launch the competition, which will involve gaining root
access to a server, on Tuesday 16 April at 11am Korean Standard Time (2am GMT) at the
Munhwa Daily Newspaper.
- Huge hydrogen stores found below Earth's crust - Scientists have
discovered vast quantities of hydrogen gas, widely regarded as the most promising
alternative to today's dwindling stocks of fossil fuels, lying beneath the Earth's crust.
The discovery has stunned energy experts, who believe that it could provide virtually
limitless supplies of clean fuel for cars, homes and industry.
- Coca-Cola unveils Vanilla Coke - Coca-Cola Co. said Monday it will
start selling Vanilla Coke, confirming recent reports that the world's largest
soft-drink maker was planning a new version of its flagship product. Vanilla Coke will hit
store shelves in the U.S. May 15.
- WD caches up 80 gig HDD - Western Digital is extending the 8MB
cache buffer offering down the Caviar line with a Special Edition version of the 80GB
EIDE hard drive.
- Intel confirms Pentium 4 price cuts - The biggest price drop in the
Pentium 4 family is the 2.20GHz/512K chip, which falls by 25 per cent to $423 from
$562. The $562 remains the price of the 2.40GHz/512K Pentium 4. The 2.0A drops 22 per cent
from $364 to $284, the 2GHz/256 from $342 to $262 (23%), and the 1.90GHz P4 drops seven
per cent to $225 from $241. Intel has however taken the axe to its 1.20GHz Pentium III
desktop chip, which falls 32 per cent from $241 to $163, while its other Tualatin Pentium
III, the 1.13A with 256K, drops 12 per cent to $153 from $173. These chips are now proving
somewhat hard to find. Other price cuts Intel makes today are on its LV/ULV mobile Intel
Pentium III-M: the 866/512 drops 24 per cent to $241, which is also the price of the
850/512 - meaning the latter is on its way out. The 800/512 drops 18 per cent to $198 from
$241.
- HP upgrades DVD+RW drives--at a price - The company will swap the
first-generation DVD100i drives with ones that will handle both DVD+RW
(DVD-rewritable) discs and the less-expensive DVD+R (DVD-recordable) discs. Last month the
PC maker backed off of its initial claims that it would offer an upgrade for its earlier
drive, the DVD100i, saying it would not be possible.
