- Pioneer cuts recordable DVD disc prices - The company halves prices to
tempt buyers, but a major obstacle remains: how to give its recordable-DVD discs the
mainstream acceptance enjoyed by read-only products.
- Mobile P4 prices "to drop dramatically" - In 1K tray
quantities, the
1.6GHz and 1.7GHz P4-M processors cost US$401 and US$508. In May, Intel could (our
italics) reduce prices to c.US$210 and US$250, Currently the 1.6GHz and 1.7GHz desktop P4s
US$133 and US$163, also for 1,000 units.
- 1024-bit encryption is 'compromised' - According to a security
debate sparked off by cryptography expert Lucky Green on Bugtraq yesterday, 1,024-bit RSA
encryption should be "considered
compromised".
- Microsoft .NET promo reveals personal info - Microsoft has
adopted an unusual approach to community building - by disclosing the personal information
of thousands of applicants for a Visual Studio web promotion. Despite being alerted to the
privacy breach, the personal details of several thousand individuals are still online.
- Vitesse slips as others ship 10-Gbit net processors - Vitesse
Semiconductor Corp. has postponed development of its 10-Gbit/second network processor, citing
a weak market for such high-end devices. The company is following the lead of at least two
sizable competitors, though a few other suppliers are delivering 10-Gbit/s devices,
including Applied Micro Circuits Corp., which started sampling its nP7510 processor this

- Early Xbox sales low in Europe - report - In the first three
days in Germany MCV says only 10,000 Xboxes got into the hands of consumers, and this position
was mirrored in France. In the UK it chalked up a healthier 48,000 in the first three
days. MCV speculates however that large quantities of machines will have been bought by
dealers; so although they might show up in any sales claims Microsoft makes (it hasn't,
yet), they're only real say when (or if) they go out of the shop door.
- Chaintech AG321 GF3 Ti200 (gold edition with 128MB) Review - In our
tests, we overclock the card using nvmax. Although we are able to run steadily for q3
at 250/570, 3Dmark2001SE fails. To demonstrate maximum overclockability, we reduce it
until 3Dmark2001SE works and all 3D graphics applications do not show any tearing. The
performance gains over standard timings 175/400 is around 2.3% ~ 24%, the differences is
larger when operating at higher resolutions.

- ATi Radeon 8500 Videocard Review - After its initial release
back in October the Radeon 8500 was met with mixed emotions. The card had immense
potential, and with such a powerful chip it should have done well but in true ATi fashion
the 8500 was plagued with driver problems. With subsequent driver updates the card got
better and better, and now it's performance is even better than the GeForce3 Ti500 in
certain benchmarks! ATI built in support for DirectX 8.1 features so the Radeon 8500
is still one of the most advanced videocards on the market today. Yes, even more
advanced than the GeForce4 Ti line of videocards! (Ed. flame here) The core of the Radeon
8500 is clocked at 275 MHz and backed up with 64 MB of DDR RAM that runs at 550 MHz. The
8500 is a videocard to be reckoned with by any measure.

Consuming less memory and CPU Cycles than Windows Media player, this player provides a
better looking, familiar interface to watch movies on your Windows PC.
- APK NTFSMax 2000++ - A program that speeds up NTFS
filesystems a great deal by tuning the filesystem at the registry level in many areas
to stop NTFS from having to make some entries on each time a file is accessed, thus less
entries made & less time spent by the filesystem drivers having to do them. It also
tunes whether the Operating System itself pages itself to disk as well, thus keeping it in
RAM for faster access/reaccess as well. (freeware)
