  • Kernel flaw leaves Linux vulnerableA security vulnerability discovered in the Linux kernel earlier this week leaves the OS vulnerable to communication from IP addresses previously blocked by firewalls. The flaw affects kernel versions 2.4.14 to 2.4.18-pre9 and, more specifically, a component of the Netfilter firewall software, which was recently included in the kernel.  The vulnerability affects users of IRC (Internet Relay Chat). Because the IRC program configures its firewall setting too broadly, it allows through packets from IP addresses that may have been blocked by Netfilter.
  • Sharpei virus hits C# note - On Friday, antivirus companies received a copy of a worm called Sharpei, which is partially written in Microsoft's newest computer language, C#, and designed to infect computers loaded with the .Net framework. Antivirus company Network Associates gave the infectious program a "low" rating for risk but highlighted it as the second example of a virus writer attempting to infect parts of the .Net framework.
  • $100,000 to Any One Who Cracks Code - A $100,000 cash prize will be awarded to any one who can crack the encryption system used to make the Hydra Internet Server impervious to hacking.
  • Copy-cat Britney virus fails to excite - The Britney virus, which made headlines yesterday and has so far failed to make an impact on users, was quite possibly created by the more clueless species of script kiddie. According to antivirus firm Sybari, the Britney virus is nothing more than the Alyssa Milano virus, but with a different name.
  • Lawmakers Urge Russians To Beef Up Piracy Enforcement - A group of U.S. lawmakers earlier this month urged Russian authorities to take software piracy and intellectual property theft more seriously. On their first day in Russia, members of the delegation obtained a pirated copy of Windows XP from a street vendor for a few dollars. The lawmakers used the pirated software to illustrate their concerns to Russian authorities, Goodlatte said.

  • Large amounts of ice on Mars - The evidence for large amounts of ice in the southern hemisphere of Mars comes from three different instruments in the Gamma-Ray Spectrometer (GRS) instrument suite on board the 2001 Mars Odyssey spacecraft: the Gamma Ray Sensor, the Neutron Spectrometer (NS), and the High-Energy Neutron Detector (HEND). Each of these instruments has detected the signal expected from a large amount of ice in the surface, or regolith, of Mars.
  • Picture's fuzzy for DVD - The DVD Forum has voted to approve a low-bit-rate compression format and red-laser technology for high-definition DVDs, a distinctly different approach from the blue-laser-based format approved by nine companies just last week. Some saw no contradiction in pursuing both blue-laser and low-bit-rate approaches. "I don't think it's confusing. It's only natural" to pursue both paths, said Jan Oosterveld (left) of Philips Electronics' group management committee.
  • New nForce chipset in March and nForce2 likely in June - Nvidia is set to launch a slightly-updated version of its core logic chipset nForce 420 in March and is said to be planning to introduce a next-generation nForce2 at Computex Taipei in June.
