  • New E-mail Worm Is No Party, Virus-Fighters Say - Researchers at Moscow-based Kaspersky Labs said today that the code behind the Myparty worm, written for the Windows operating system, isn't particularly unusual, including its ability to open a backdoor in some versions of Windows that could then be exploited by hackers. However, Kaspersky spokesman Denis Zenkin said, the virus author's decision to name his executable file like a Web URL - "www.myparty.yahoo.com" - appears to be fooling many Internet users who are finding the file linked to e-mail messages.
  • New York Times internal network hacked - In a two-minute scan performed on a whim, twenty-one-year-old hacker and sometimes-security consultant Adrian Lamo discovered no less than seven misconfigured proxy servers acting as doorways between the public Internet and the Times' private intranet, making the latter accessible to anyone capable of properly configuring their Web browser.
  • Woman sues Nintendo for death of son - A Louisiana woman is suing Nintendo, alleging her 30-year-old son suffered seizures after playing video games for eight hours a day, six days a week. The lawsuit filed in federal court says the man died last year after hitting his head and mouth on a table during one of the seizures. It claims the man never had seizures before buying a Nintendo-64 player in 1999.
  • New Pentium 4 to debut in 2003 - Intel demonstrated a Pentium 4-based chip running at 4GHz, giving a sneak peak at its future line of desktop processors. The chip is currently nearly twice as fast as processors in the current line-up that run at 2.2GHz. The demo chip needed some unusual cooling methods to work, unlike the normal air-cooled 3GHz Pentium previewed earlier in the week by Intel's chief executive, Craig Barrett.
  • Sony Ericsson Set to Unveil Color Screen Phones - Mobile phone maker Sony Ericsson, battling to build market share in the competitive market for handsets, will present new, color screen models at a news conference on Tuesday, a company source said on Thursday.
  • AMD's Hammer in Action - As you've undoubtedly heard, AMD has announced that they have a working version of their upcoming Claw Hammer processor. Not only did we get a chance to see it running two different operating systems, but we actually got to hold the CPU (how geeky can we get?) and take a look at AMD's first reference board based on the AMD-8000 chipset.
  • AMD Jokes at Intel's Expense - Well, let it never be said that AMD doesn't have a sense of humor! :) Check out this image at AMDDB.com.
  • Leadtek GeForce 4 MX and Gainward GeForce 3 Ti 200 Review - Overclockers received a Leadtek A170 GF4 MX card. The card is designed to replace GF2 Ti/Pro/GST lines. However, the name of GF4 MX is a bit confusing. GF4 MX is like a hybrid of GF2 Ti and GF4, with all GF4's DX8.1 features taken out. In short, GF4 MX is a glorified GF2 Ti. However, many consumers may think GF4 MX is faster than a GF3 Ti200 since it's from a later generation. In order to clarify this, we get in a Gainward GF3 Ti200 128MB graphics card to show how the two stack up in real world situation.
  • GeForce 4 Ti 4600 Review - Less than two months ago, nVidia released their souped-up version of the GeForce3, artfully named Ti500. Core clock speed had been increased from 200MHz to 240MHz while DDR memory had increased from 230MHz to 250MHz. Referencing our early Ti500 review, the increase in performance over its predecessor, the GeForce3 was less than ten percent. According to nVidia, difficulty obtaining those high yields affected the availability and in turn, created a shortage of Ti500-based boards. Though the Ti4600 possesses many of the features found in the Geforce3 Ti500, nVidia added and in some areas improved on its previous technology.
  • Creative CD MP3 Player Review - MP3 CD players have been in the market for quite some time- the first one I ever used was the Genica but it was buggy and ate batteries like it was its last day in existence. We have come quite a long way from the Genica and today, MP3 CD players work like a dream.
  • AVM Fritz!Card DSL Modem Review - FRITZ!Card DSL connects the PC to high-speed ADSL Internet access and at the same time provides all ISDN services, including as telefax, text messages and file transfer.
  • Guide - Powering up an ATX psu without a motherboard - Many people don't have enough power because they're using a 250-watt PSU, or they're running a 300-watt and want to use a peltier. Well you can buy an expensive new PSU or you can be cheap and connect another PSU to your pc for powering the other hardware in your case. But how do you power up the second PSU?  So here will start this small guide on powering up a second ATX PSU...
  • Lite-On 40x12x48x CD-RW Drive Review - LITE-ON has outdone itself by raising the bar on CD ReWritable technology. The 40x12x48x is the fastest drive on the market. I've burned about 20 cd's since receiving the LITE-ON 40x CD-RW yesterday and so far I haven't produced even a single coaster.
  • Click & Design 3D Review - This new program enables users to design sleek 3D labels for burned CDs, using all sorts of tricks and effects previously only seen in programs like Photoshop and Corel Draw. But can it compete with the free stuff that comes with most CD burners today? Read the review to find out...
  • Direct3D & OpenGL Comparison - In this article, I concentrate on only two API's: OpenGL (version 1.3) and Direct3D (version 8.1). I don't have enough experience with any other API to discuss it in detail, but I'll at least comment on Glide later.
  • Microsoft Hardware Compatibility Lists updated - These are essential for anyone who is looking to see if hardware will work on a OS or not.
  • Scripting flaw leaves sites vulnerable - A flaw in a common open-source scripting language, PHP, could allow attackers to crash an Apache Web site or compromise a server.
  • Authentication Flaw Could Allow Unauthorized Users To Authenticate To SMTP - An attacker who exploited the vulnerability could gain only user-level privileges on the SMTP service, thereby enabling the attacker to use the service but not to administer it. The most likely purpose in exploiting the vulnerability would be to perform mail relaying via the server.
  • Site Server 3.0 patch required for setup on Wind2k - Before you install Site Server 3.0 on Windows 2000, you must run this Ss3w2k.exe file.
  • Messenger XP Patch For Audio/Video & Voice.Net - This update resolves several issues in the Windows Messenger Client and eliminates popping sounds coming from the speakers and more.
  • ZoneAlarm Pro Beta v3.0.077 - This version addresses start-up issues on WinXP. Beta testers of ALL Windows platforms, but especially Win98 and XP, are asked to focus on ZoneAlarm Pro start-up/reboot and report back any issues.
  • Style XP 8.2 Beta - It uses Microsoft's built-in visual style engine, but enhances it by providing many useful tools. Style XP can import, select, rotate, and manage Themes, Visual Styles, Wallpaper, and Logons.
  • Fraps v1.7 - Fraps now draws the counter for all DirectX and OpenGL games using simple polygons to ensure minimal overhead. The performance hit of running Fraps with your game should be under 1% in all circumstances. Because of the above change, some older games (DirectX7 or earlier) that used to crash now work fine.
  • Easy CD-DA Extractor v4.6.9 build 3 - Easy CD-DA Extractor is a powerful and easy digital audio extraction utility that makes digital copies from audio CDs and saves as audio files such as MP3, Windows Media Audio and Windows Wave
  • Radeonator v1.60 - Radeonator is a tool for tweaking your ATI Radeon 8xxx/7xxx/64DDR/LE/VE/32DDR cards.
  • WinHvance v1.5.1 - This free program offers more than 170 Windows operating systems registry tweaks forWindows 95/98/98SE/ME.
  • PCITimer v2.0 - This utility will allow the modification or display of the PCI latency timer of a PCI device if its PCI latency timer is located at offset D. I've used it to modify the PCI latency timer of modems, VIA EIDE controllers and sound cards. Curiously I'm surprised a modem would be capable of bus-mastering at all -- considering it has got to be the slowest device you can find on the PCI bus.
  • Hercules Soundcard Drivers - Hercules has updated their FTP: Hercules Game Theater XP drivers 4.10, Hercules Gamesurround Fortissimo II drivers 1.50, Hercules Gamesurround Muse XL drivers 6.33, Hercules Gamesurround Muse LT drivers 6.32.
