- MS Shows New Wireless Platform - Microsoft officially unveiled
its newest platform Tuesday for wireless communicator devices, which blend the
functionality of wireless telephony and handhelds. In addition, the company also announced
that Hewlett-Packard had agreed to release the first device, the HP Jornada 928 Wireless
Digital Assistant, based on the Pocket PC 2002 Phone Edition platform. The color device
will support next-generation GPRS wireless communications, the company said.
- MVQ streaming may blow away MPEG-4 - Finnish developer Oplayo
says its Java-based compression technology is up to ten times faster
than MPEG-4 for delivering audio and video to mobile devices.
- PirateVideo site closed - Taiwanese attempt to run an online
video on demand service without the permission of the Hollywood film studios has been shut down. Dubbed a
"pirate" site by Hollywood, Movie88.com offered access to a huge library of
films for just $1 each.

- XBox Controllers Incompatible?! - It's maybe a rumor but NCV's
sources from Microsoft's X-Box division and independent developers sent a number of
e-mails to NCS yesterday after they posted their little FAQ. Unfortunately, Microsoft
appears to have mandated that USA XBox software titles not
recognize any controllers from other territories. Japanese controllers won't work with
USA XBox software. However seems this doesn't mean all peripherals will be region encoded.
Apparently Joypads will work on both sides of the pond. (thanks SlashDot)

that ensures compatibility of DirectX 8 games in a Linux environment.
