  • Nasa hacker thrown in the slammer - 20 year-old hacker who broke into computers at Nasa's Jet Propulsion laboratory has been sentenced almost four years after the event. Jason Allen Diekman was sentenced yesterday (4 February) to 21 months in prison and ordered to pay restitution of $88,000 for breaking into Nasa in 1998.
  • Virus Can Exploit Long Path under NTFS to Evade Detection - The NTFS file system seems to be a hiding place for viruses if they utilize a file path that exceeds 256 characters. This vulnerability allows virus writers to store infected files in directories that would not be checked by the antivirus, and therefore will not be detected or removed.
  • Vulnerability in Black ICE Defender - When the sender of the flood is running BID, the machine quickly suffers a
    BSOD, exception 0x1E, in blackdrv.sys. Exception 0x1E occurs when a kernel-mode exception is not handled, indicating poor coding practice or insufficient testing within a kernel-mode driver.
  • Another mIRC bug - I mentioned html bug in mIRC yesterday, but I missed another one - if a compromised server sends a name that is more than 200 characters long to a chatter's computer, the data causes a memory problem, called a buffer overflow, that allows code appended to the data to be executed on that computer. Typically, such a hidden command causes a malicious program to be downloaded and installed. The flaws only affect versions of mIRC up to, and excluding, the latest release, version 6.0.
  • Chinese SMS can crash Siemens mobiles - Siemens is evaluating the impact of a security bug that allows malicious hackers to crash phones by sending a malformed SMS message in Chinese. The flaw, which affects Siemens 3568i (or below) mobiles but not Siemens 6688 phones, involves a bug in the way exceptional characters are displayed, Chinese researchers xfocus advise.
  • Lindows preview--good, bad or ugly? - A preview edition of the Lindows OS offers insight into how the software will aim to combine the benefits of Windows and Linux. But it still leaves many unconvinced.
  • Microsoft pushes Flash for interactive TV - Macromedia announced an agreement with Microsoft on Monday to increase support for Macromedia's Flash animation player in Microsoft TV, the software giant's interactive TV software.
  • Maxtor goes large with external HDDs - Maxtor is inching its way into Iomega territory, by tripling the disk size for its Personal Storage 3000LE USB 2.0 external hard drive line. The latest 120GB model ships in the US 'in early February' and carries a manufacturer's suggested retail price (MSRP)of $299.95. You can buy it also online through MaxtorDirect. Maxtor is retaining the 40GB Personal Storage model - this has an MSRP of $199.
