  • Pre-order the Geforce4 MX for $118/$115! - Although nVidia hasn't officially announced it yet, you can pre-order this card at PCMall and ECost.
  • Intel chipsets could boost USB 2.0 -  USB 2.0, the standard for connecting peripherals to PCs, is expected to get a significant plug once it is integrated into Intel chipsets by mid-year.
  • Security Hole Found In Some Sony Vaio Computers - Sony Corp. today warned owners of some recently purchased Vaio computers that a software glitch could open a hole for intruders via the Internet or e-mail. "If the Vaio is attacked in this way, it may result in stored data being overwritten, erased or copied," said a security advisory on Sony's Web site. "In this instance, running regular anti-virus software will not protect the affected models of Vaio."
  • NTT researchers predict 10Gbps wireless - NTT Corp, Japan's incumbent telco, claims to have raised the ceiling on wireless bandwidth, after achieving a peak data transfer rate of 2.5Gbps in laboratory trials. The previous highest wireless transfer rate was 1Gbps, but NTT's researchers believe they can ultimately take wireless communications up to 10Gbps.
  • Software Tool From CNet Opens Security Hole - CNet Catchup, a popular Windows software update utility, contains a security vulnerability that could enable a remote attacker to run malicious code on the user's computer. According to CNet Networks' Catchup Dispatch newsletter, distributed Jan. 23, the vulnerability affects all previous versions of Catchup and allows an attacker "to launch Catchup and execute arbitrary code on a user's system."
  • Serious Security Hole In AOL's ICQ - Yet with ICQ, a person who wishes to establish a direct connection to a machine running the vulnerable ICQ program can simply query an ICQ server for the IP address and listening port of the victim. For that reason, CERT said blocking requests through a central server is not a completely effective solution, because ICQ requests can be sent directly from one client to another. AOL has not yet devised a "patch" for the security hole. Rather, the company is urging all ICQ users to upgrade to a new beta version.
  • Microsoft .Net Beta Signup in February - Microsoft will be accepting applications in February to join the Mappoint .Net beta team for the Mappoint .Net SDK (which will be released in March) among other things.
  • Radeon 8500XT soon? - According to SavageNews, ATi is going to release this card pretty soon. A few days before, or after the announcement of NVIDIA's GeForce4. The RADEON 8500 XT will works at 300MHz (core/mem) and may feature the usual goods from ATi - TV-Out and HydraVision (Dual Display).
