- Aliz Virus Returns - Aliz, which affects Windows PCs, was first
identified by anti-virus experts back in May but it was only this week that it began
spreading rapidly. MessageLabs, a managed services firm which scans for and blocks viruses
in its clients email, recorded only a trickle of incidents of the worm prior to Monday,
when it exploded onto the scene. Statistics from MessageLabs record that it blocked Aliz 1849
times yesterday and 769 times so far today, making it the second most common email
infector behind the infamous SirCam worm.
- eBook hacker brought to book - Dmitri Sklyarov, the Russian
programmer who broke the encryption on Adobe's eBook software, will be in court on Monday
morning for a pretrial hearing. Sklyarov was arrested this summer at hacker fest, Def Con,
for breaching the Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA). He created a tool that was
capable of copying documents protected by Adobe's eBook software, by circumventing the
encryption system.
- Next Linux kernel, v2.5, is born - Two days ago the next version
of the Linux
kernel, v2.5, was quietly born over at kernel.org. At the moment (or possibly, given
the way Linux develops, at that moment) the move is/was a purely administrative one, but
it means that the 2.5 kernel will now be developed as a separate entity from 2.4.
- WinXP wants your hard drive partitions - When you install the XP
upgrade package it
overwrites the Master Boot Record to ensure that you point to the boot partition. Of
course, that's where you already are, because you're running from it. By doing so, XP
effectively kills your boot manager.
- Via's graphic plans - According to TheInquirer, Columbia is still a paper
chip with its current schedule now June 2002. They don't know why Via changed its
plans but Via sources told them that if they launched it in spring it would be one of the
fastest solutions – four pipelines 300 MHz DDR and DX9 compatibility are things that we
will see from ATI, Nvidia and PoverVR in spring.
- NV25 Info - This graphics processor that have similar capabilities compared with XGPU
is a lot more powerful than GeForce3 Ti500. Since it is manufactured using 0.13 microns
technology, it has a lot of chances to be clocked at the very high levels. The GPU comes
in January/February 2002, while professional boards should be available in the second
quarter.

- Imation RipGo MP3 Mini-CD Burner review - RipGo
allows you to copy dozens of digital music files from your PC or Mac onto a 185MB mini
CD-R via USB. Unplug the cord and you're out the door with about three hours of music.
It's a nice concept and device, but the RipGo isn't without a few shortcomings.
